Antique 19th century American Victorian needlepoint picture in oval dark walnut frame, measuring 22" by 19". This was acquired recently from a local Santa Monica estate that was like "New England West"---filled with eastern Americana and furnishings. The piece appears to date to about the third quarter of the 19th century, maybe to 1890 at the latest. Note the wood peg style construction of the frame...

A wonderful American folk art portrait of a Methodist minister painted by Ammi Phillips (1788–1865). The distinguished gentleman is sitting at a table, with his hand holding a pair of spectacles and resting on a Methodist hymnal. The finely rendered depiction of the large dominating figure with dark clothing emphasizes the gravitas of the sitter.

The painting is 32 5/8 inches by 27 1/4 inches sight size, and 37 7/8 inches by 32 3/4 inches framed size...

Watercolor still life of wildflowers and some cultivated ones, in a vase of the period, large size at 24" by 18" inside the mat, 35" by 28 3/4" as framed, unsigned, in the nineteenth century tradition that traces its roots back to stencil type paintings. This would likely date to the period 1850 to 1880. Detail is painstaking and extreme; this artist was no amateur. There are bluebells, forget-me-nots, roses, fuchsia, some kind of lily, some kind of daisy and others...

An extraordinary pair of painted tin toleware planters in the form of canoes. One is painted white with blue and red accent stripes and the other is red with blue and white accents. Each of the canoes has its original leather-wrapped wire hanger, and the undersides have trays to catch water drips. The drip trays also allow the canoes to placed on a surface instead of hanging. The paint is completely original and has a great crusty surface...

A rare opportunity to acquire a 19th century American sampler, including not only the date (26th March 1833) but also the location (Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine). An extremely nice tinsel, or foil, painting, showing a pearlescent urn overflowing with a wide variety of flowers, with a fallen rose bud at the base of the urn.

Housed in a period and probably original frame, measuring 17" by 13 1/4", the painting itself is 12" by 8 1/2". The condition of this gem is excellent.

Tinsel paintings of this type are almost a completely American form, becoming highly popular around 1870, and continuing into the mid 20th century...

A very nice and unusual pencil face doll with sewn on brown ticking skirt that was made as a stump doll. She never had legs, see picture. She is 10" to the bottom of her skirt and 8" to the bottom of her body. She is firmly stuffed with cotton and is truly a prairie type country primitive doll. Circa 1880-90.

Early all hand sewn with tiny stitches black doll. The embroidered face is outstanding with the raised eyes, the pupils on a bed of white layered thread and her mouth is also done that same technique. For hair she has cotton floss thread sewn to her head and it is most effective. She has attached arms and legs so she sits easily. Her body is stuffed firmly with cotton. Over all she is in very good condition with only slight discoloration from age and use...

Showing the whimsy that exemplifies good American folk art, this watercolor double portrait depicts a young man and woman who are clearly siblings. The artist achieved a starkness by having them in black clothing and not accentuating the details of their garb. In fact, the basic touches of color are only the blue in the girl's eyes and in the sky against which they are posed. Note that neither sitter is gazing directly at the viewer, nor are they looking in the same direction...

A nice 19th C. black wool spaniel dog with a red tape collar. He has wire enforced legs. His wool shows areas of wear but no holes. He is 7" long and 7" tall. He has a great little face.

A beautifully executed American watercolor on paper portrait painting of a woman. The sitter has auburn curls and is dressed in an Empire style dress with wide lace collar, a paisley bordered shawl, white turban, and matching pearl and gem brooch and earrings. All the details are very finely limned.

The painting is in excellent condition, with no creases, tears, fading, or restoration. Sight size is 8" by 6 1/4", and the gilt molded frame size is 10" by 8 1/4".

English Georgian Mahogany Cutlery Tray or Box with Brass handle, Ca. 1820's, 13 1/4" x 9" wide, 5 1/4" high with brass handle, dovetail joint on four(4) corners, joints and brass handle is very tight in good condition except some dark stains.

An example of American folk art drawing: watercolor of roses on the stem with leaves, created circa 1840 by an artist working in the distinctive style of the time. The piece measures 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (12 3/4" by 10 3/4" in faux wood grain frame of the period). Since it is that old, the paper shows evidence of the great age; there is browning/foxing at lower corners/along right side as shown. Someone, perhaps the artist, interestingly made intentional pinholes in the paper in the rose at right...

This is a great 1890 mohair cat that stands nicely on its own. He has about 70% of his mohair. He has a loved face with a bit of a pushed up nose. I think he is a Steiff but is without a button. He is 13" long and 9" tall to the top of his head.
