Urn-shaped, with a stylized tulip border, the sides with mask “handles”, all in the Empire style of the late 18th / early 19th century. Very attractive Victorian lacquered papier-mache soap box decorated with a japonaise design. The sides show laborers pulling a boat filled with partiers along a canal. The lid shows a kneeling maiden tending her flower garden in a classic Japanese garden. The lid is also decorated with the soap maker's logo. Japanese styled items were very popular in France from around 1870 until the end of the century.

Fiddle dinner spoon from Hall & Elton (1839 -1890), Connectitcut, the pointed shape of the blade indicates mid 19th century. Hall & Elton is known to have made lots of silvered cutlery. However, this spoon is tested for a silver content of at least 830/1000 (= Swedish silver standard), and so probably is coin silver. Sterling silver was introduced 1870 in America. An Oude Loosdrecht porcelain soup plate with an off-center bouquet in the bowl, scattered flowers and a molded lip picked out in blue. The gilt rim is slightly shaped. Marked on the bottom in underglaze blue with the initials M.O.L. and incised with numbers, letters and a star. 9 ½ inches (24 cm) diameter.

Condition: A fairly substantial chip to the rim on one side and a small under the rim chip on the other. Stack wear, especially around the border between the lip and the bowl...
