This Chinese carved bamboo brush rest has traditional dragons chasing pearl and cloud motif. The background shape is the 5 mountains and the rim of the mountains have carved ridges. The piece measures 3.5 inches high and 6 inches across. The natural curve of the bamboo allows the piece to stay upright, and the piece remains balanced on the 1/2 inch thick bamboo. Condition is very good.

Rather unusual 19th century or earlier Chinese scholar’s object in a form of a natural agate nugget rather realistically resembling a group of three persimmons. Superb fingering piece with wonderful patina on the surface from generations of handling, feels extremely pleasant in one’s hand. Guaranteed to be the only object of that shape in the world, looks great on a scholar’s desk. Length 2 3/16 inches.

Late Qing Dynasy (1880s 10 1911) Chinese scholar small jadeite seal of round section with ball shaped finial containing a hole for hanging. Wonderful piece appropriate for scholar’s desk. The bottom is carved with two raised characters, old dried red seal paste in the grooves. Delicately white/green natural untreated jadeite with darker green areas, beautiful finish to the surface. Height 1 5/8 inches, diameter 3/8 inches.

Late Qing Dynasty (pre 1911) Chinese scholar jadeite seal of irregular rectangular shape. Does not photograph well. Wonderful austere piece appropriate for a scholar’s table, pleasant finish to the stone. The bottom is carved with two raised characters, red seal paste in the grooves. Off-white natural untreated jadeite with touch of green and russet skin areas. Imprint of the seal is shown on Enlargement 1. Height 1 11/16 inches.

19th century Chinese pewter covered box for storing small items on scholar’s desk engraved with flowering prunus on the top, and brass trim along ornately shaped rim. Beautifully made, pleasant patina. Stamped on the inside of the cover with maker’s seal in Chinese which reads HUANG YOU. Great patina, wonderful object for scholar’s table. Height with cover 1 inch, length 4 3/4 inches.

With an inscription Chen down underside, the basin was in adequate weight comparing with its size.
It was a typical scholar item in small size, whatsoever still owned the strong scholar taste.

Chinese Bamboo Brush pot, carved design was highlighted with black lacquer ink and filled in, 5 3/8" high, 1 7/8" x 1 3/4" wide-top rim, Ca. before 1920's, incised black decoration of figure under the tropical tree next to bamboo fence. The condition is good.

During the late 1800's and early 1900's eyeglasses became an important accessory for the Chinese. Upon seeing eyeglasses on visiting Western dignitaries and businessmen, the Chinese perceived and admired these "spectacles" as age enhancing. Not only did the eyeglasses improve eyesight...but they added age and dignity to the face of the wearer. Equating age with wisdom and respect, many Chinese took up the custom of wearing eyeglasses...

Late Qing (1900s) Chinese sculpture / scholar’s rock made out of natural rootwood (or at least the lower part of a trunk. Rich architecture of multiple branches and knots, beautiful texture of the surface. Wonderful mellow patina, very pleasant feel of age to the piece, nicely heavy. Excellent item for a scholar’s desk. Height 10 inches.

DESCRIPTION: A large wooden scholar’s brush used to paint large calligraphy. Thick black bristles are gathered into a bulbous wood ferrule, turned from the same wood as the handle. The tip of the handle is pierced for hanging. A very nice old brush, good for display in large brush pots; 19th C., normal wear as would be expected. DIMENSIONS: 16” long (41 cm).
