DESCRIPTION: A large wooden scholar’s brush used to paint large calligraphy. Thick black bristles are gathered into a bulbous wood ferrule, turned from the same wood as the handle. The tip of the handle is pierced for hanging. A very nice old brush, good for display in large brush pots; 19th C., normal wear as would be expected. DIMENSIONS: 16” long (41 cm).

Late Qing (1900s) Chinese sculpture / scholar’s rock made out of natural rootwood (or at least the lower part of a trunk. Rich architecture of multiple branches and knots, beautiful texture of the surface. Wonderful mellow patina, very pleasant feel of age to the piece, nicely heavy. Excellent item for a scholar’s desk. This pair of Lotus Shoes have a lotus blossom embroidered on each side of the white silk vamp. Used and showing many signs of wear, they are also a bit are dirtier than they appear in the pictures. One of the leather heels is missing. They measure just a bit over 5" heel to toe tip...

ntique Chinese embroidery on silk, gold thread depicting dragons, flaming pearls, birds, lions and scrolling designs, outer banks of silk in blue and grey, back is black material, appears to be cotton, 19th century or earlier. Measures 40' x 10". The center of the panel (it was made in 2 sections, joined at center) depicts birds in flight, next to them are foo lions in gold and white or silver thread, with large dragons next, all in bright gold thread, eyes of black and white...

During the late 1800's and early 1900's eyeglasses became an important accessory for the Chinese. Upon seeing eyeglasses on visiting Western dignitaries and businessmen, the Chinese perceived and admired these "spectacles" as age enhancing. Not only did the eyeglasses improve eyesight...but they added age and dignity to the face of the wearer. Equating age with wisdom and respect, many Chinese took up the custom of wearing eyeglasses...

Women of the Miao Chinese minority did not cut their hat...when the hair was worn "bun Style" on the top of the head, the comb would be positioned horizontally, with the tynes pushed under the "bun"...and the silver dangles would hang down...the actual "comb" is hand carved and covered with silver for decoration...

Unusual early 19th (can be as early as 18th) century Chinese pewter covered round box, the cover with brass inlay of a flowering bush. Might have been used on scholar’s table for storing small items such as ink cakes. Beautiful patina, pleasantly heavy, wonderful feel of age to the piece. Diameter 3 3/8 inches, height 2 1/4 inches.

Attractive QING Dynasty tray with translucent rice grain pattern and marking on bottom, 19th Century, good condition with a few tiny chips on rim, no hairlines, cracks nor repairs. Size: 6.5" (16.5 cm.) diameter, height 1.25" (3.25 cm.)

1600s / 1700s

This water pot is in the shape of drum which doubles as a paperweight for painting and calligraphy. It is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and iron oxide in a rather cursive depiction of flowers and butterflies. The side has two sections of calligraphy covered with a thick, translucent glaze, somewhat obscuring the brushwork. The base is not glazed and shows considerable wear and soiling from use...

Large Chinese Ming Dynasty Stoneware Jar with Spout

This unusual jar was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Apart from the short spout at the shoulder, it is a conventionally-shaped storage jar. The outer surface and inner mouth are coated in a black glaze. The glaze falls just short of the bottom of the jar leaving the concave base unglazed. Likewise, the inner surface also remains unglazed.

This is quite large jar with a height of 22.25cm, diameter 20.5 cm...

Han Dynasty, Late 200 BCE – 200 CE

This jar is well-potted pinkish-orange earthenware that is covered in a deep green glaze that has degraded in places and developed iridescence from burial. The base is unglazed, as is the interior, revealing the place orange earthenware clay body. There are three spur marks on the rim from stacking in the firing. There are no cracks or restorations.

Unusual 19th century Chinese bracelet consisting of seventeen fruit pits, each is skillfully carved all around with scenes of Chinese scholars involved in various activities: reading scrolls, studying fungus of immortality, or engaged in discussions. Carved in deep relief with precise undercutting and scrolling designs. Excellent mellow brown patina, restrung recently on elastic cord. When lying flat the inside diameter is about 2 1/4 inches, will fit any wrist...
