A Japanese boxwood okimono of a rat-catcher preparing the miso on a big bowl before catching the rat. Black horn eyes. Excellent quality and great patina. Jigaku signature under the base. A Japanese large and unusual boxwood netsuke depicting a child playing the drum with his hands, held still with his feet. He wears a Shishi mask with articulated jaw that opens and shows the child’s face. It was worn during the famous shishimai festival 獅子舞 (lion dance), a sacred animal in Japanese mythology. A Bronze elephant under attack by two tigers, one tiger is on his back, and one is under his front foot. The elephant has a finely chased hide and original ivory tusks, and the tigers have etched bronze strips. There is a makers mark inscribed on the bottom of the elephant's right front foot which says "Jonon"(south castle). The okimono measures about 7" wide x 7 1/2" tall, and dates to the Meiji Period. The condition is excellent, and it comes with a burl wood stand...

Antique Japanese rare and tall ikebana basket, intricately woven of fine split bamboo. The body of the basket has a beautiful, undulating quality. The woven pattern is wildly natural on the lower portion, then switches to ordered bands closer to a wide rim. The extraordinary handle is made of twisted root wood.

Late Meiji (1890s to 1910s) netsuke of a standing fat baby boy wearing just a bib and holding a thick rope that serves as a collar for a puppy standing next to him. Excellent carving, great chubby face, superb depiction of his fat body and fingers. Nice flow to the rope with its twisted texture, expert use of black, orange and golden ink, beautiful wear and patina. Signed HOZAN on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 470, number 741). Height 1 13/16 inches.

Beautiful Japanese light colored gold guilt lacquered case with fans. There are six fans with cranes, landscape scenes, and fruit. Original brass hardware has a lovely scrolling design. The interior has two drawers below one compartment with latticed sliding doors. Mid - Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). It measures 14.5" tall by 16.5" wide by 9.5" deep.

A Japanese Satsuma moon flask vase with bae decorated with flowers and chrysanthemums in polychrome and gold enamels. Central rounded disc with 100 different species of birds approx on one side, in the other cherry tree in bloom with a pair of pheasants, sparrows and nightingales, along the band a pair of shi-shi with ring. This is a wonderful Meiji Era Satsuma tray from Seikozan. The detail is outstanding but the condition is even better. The condition of this piece is pristine and like new or the day it left the workshop. In fact, this piece is the finest preserved example of Meiji era Satsuma we have ever had. Ironically, we found a small factory repair to one of the corners. We ran tests and it is absolutely a gold covered Seikozan factory repair (See last image).

A small eggshell-thin dish with a decoration of two birds and two fan-shaped panels - one with a landscape, the other with a poem (?), all in a variety of colours, 19th c.
