Kicho made of kosode (meaning kimono with small opening of wrists) which is made of silk damask dyed with beni (safflower). All embroideries are also vegetable dye silk yarn and gold yarn. Kicho is a kind of screen used as blinder, wind guard and partition. It was used in the house of the aristocrats since Heian period (late 8th to 11th century). Late 18th century netsuke of Rihaku seated leaning on a large wine jar with one hand and holding a wine cup in the other. Rihaku (Li Po in Chinese) was a celebrated, probably the most famous poet of China equally renown for his love of wine. Strong early carving, wonderful face and detailing of his clothes, of typical early triangular section. Wonderful feel of age, excellent patina. Height 1 1/8 inches.
This finely detailed Chinese porcelain plate would make a fine addition to any Rose Mandarin or Rose Medallion collection. It is unusual in that the central medallion features a group of scholars. The rough and somewhat gritty bottom of the plate without any factory markings suggest a factory production circa 1850-1891. In very good antique condition, there is some wear to the enameling in one spot. See photos. Measures 9.5 inches diameter.
