These extraordinary Sumida Gawa vases have a red ground with leaf-shaped moulding wrapped around the surface. Thick earthy-coloured flambe glaze cascades down from the rims and over branch-like double handles. Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to the bodies of these works and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvas upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted.

This is a wonderful bright and colorful wireless cloisonne vase from Kumeno. The vase actually looks more like porcelain than cloisonne enamel. It has a pleasing stout form and is in excellent overall condition with some rim oxidation/wear. It stands 6 inches tall and is 5 inches wide.

This is an intact and very fine example of this ware which, to me, seems to incorporate a human torso, standing with arms and legs akimbo. The colors are quite vivid, with an aubergine purple in addition to the black outlining. The piece is well and thinly potted, standing some 7" in height.It swells out to some 7" in diameter, measured across the area of the two rings ("lugs").

Dark brown patina bronze sculpture of a monkey with shakudo eyes. Sitting, he is contemplating or examining attentively a small turtle placed on his right hand, held with care. The latter is removable. The monkey's eyes seem to be illuminated by what he is observing through the shakudo (copper alloy typically containing 3-7% gold, mainly used for its black-purple lacquer-like patina).
