Unsigned acrylic/oil portrait of a woman worker acquired from a Hong Kong auction. I am assuming this was painted while China and Russia were still friends so would date this pre 1960. Good example of Socialist Realism (girl meets tractor) kitsch, W: 35cm/13.8in and H: 45.cm/17.8in.

This note discusses Haku Maki's Poem 70–14. Poem from the Manyoshu, and the sources of the kanji he used to create the print. The note was written in August 2019 by Robert Craft.

Black ink on tan paper, depicts a semi nude woman in what looks like bar or speakeasy setting, with gramophone and leering man in the background. Woodblock print by Earl M. Washington, page measures 11" x 8 3/8", woodblock image is 6 1/4" x 5", mat is 13 1/2" x 11". Black ink on cream color paper, in white mats with glassine cover over image. Signed E.M. Washington, titled "Race Mixing", number 2 of 30, with date of 1932, though was printed in the 1990's. Image depicts a violent scene, a black man attacking a nude woman, with knife in his hand. Maybe an image of a racist propaganda poster or leaflet, or an original by Washington...

A charming pastel signed M. Gibert Paris. Framed, there is a title that is obscured by the mat on the left side. The gilt frame is chipped, the picture is fine. The frame measures 18" x 15-7/8".

Here is a companion piece to our other listing by M. Gibert. The title is evident and it is signed in the lower right corner. The frame also shows some wear and measures 18" x 15-7/8".

Stunning tall pair of Japanese rabbits with a rich bronze patina over metal. Very heavy, they have the weight of solid bronze and the underlying metal may possibly be white bronze. A terrific decorator item, they are in very good condition with only minor abrasions underneath. Standing rabbit measures 9.75 inches high and 9" long. Reclining rabbit measures 9.5" at ear tip and 11" long. Dates 2nd half 20th C

This print--Haku Maki's Poem 71-9--is the kanji for woman.

A fine miniature painting done with watercolors on natural material. The sitter is dressed in a diaphanous white gown edged in pale blue at the bodice, with a similar scarf trailing from her towering hair style.

The reverse of the portrait deserves special mention as it depicts a sheaf of wheat done with meticulous hairwork, cinched with a gold band and set against a mother of pearl background. Wheat was often used to symbolize immortality and resurrection...
