Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is one of England's most beloved modern artists, his body of work, generally executed in a distinctive naive style, focusing on (as Wikipedia listing says) "scenes of life in industrial districts of North West England and 20th century urban landscapes peopled with human figures referred to as 'matchstick men'". He was a generally shy and not especially sociable, humble man, who turned down a number of honors such as knighthood, by an appreciative nation...

Old watercolor on paper painting, a study of trees by a lake, the artist likely American, circa 1920's, 13 1/4" by 8 1/2" inside the old mat, possibly signed at extreme lower right corner but it is indecipherable. There are old framer's instructions on the reverse side. The work was found framed and the frame is possibly available to the purchaser at no extra charge, but it is worn and tired. A fresh framing job will do wonders for this fine old watercolor painting.

Vintage oil of white, yellow and pink roses on a table top, circa Victorian late 19th century to the early years of the new century, apparently unsigned, in pleasing old wood and gilt frame, the entire work as framed measuring 11" by 13 1/4". The canvas is laid against the backing but is not glued down to it so there is some rippling. Other than a few minor surface abrasions the overall impression is quite beautiful. A fine acquisition for the still life collector or shabby chic decorator.

Oil on canvas painting of a forest, 18" by 18", in its original oak frame 22" by 22", signed at lower right in red "MOORE" and dated there 1927 or 1924. The painting is a beautiful example of American impressionism of the early 20th century, with some really lovely colors hiding under the grime of nearly 90 years. Works by the artist, who passed away in his mid seventies, have been exhibited at a number of galleries, particularly in the Paso Robles area of central California. Samuel Colman (1832-1920, sometimes misspelled as "Coleman") is today regarded as an important American artist of the nineteenth century, some of his works selling into the six figures at major auction. A traveler, he strayed far from his New England roots, taking in exotic locales in the Mediterranean, continental Europe, Mexico, and, notably, the American West. After training under Asher B. Durand and Carolus-Duran, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York as early as 1850,...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Watercolor : Pre 1900 item #1419547 (stock #JB02237)
Watercolor on paper painting of a classic stone castle with figures outside its portals, 14" by 10 1/2" (26 1/2" by 23" as framed), apparently unsigned. This is a circa 1850 work which has survived in presentable condition. There is foxing in the sky principally, as shown, but no large stains. To be sure, there were a lot of anonymous skilled watercolor artists in the British Isles in the 19th century, though this might well have been created by an artist that would be "listed" today.
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Watercolor : Pre 1900 item #1419550 (stock #JB02280)
Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper painting 13 3/4" by 9 1/2" inside the mat, of a large and impressive castle on a hill, (possibly Windsor Castle near London), a pastoral landscape with figures in the foreground, signed in pencil at lower right "A WATT". There is a listing for an Arthur George Watt (1883-1935) but I doubt this be the same artist, as the techniques and style do not mesh and the dates are wrong; this drawing is earlier. The drawing is beautifully executed by a talented...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Oil : Asia : Pre 2000 item #1419551 (stock #JB02283)
Small decorative oil on canvas of a scene in Thailand with small boats, a figure paddling one of them, two ducks, and a house on a shore, 6" by 9" (9 1/2" by 12 1/4"), signed at lower right "Sak" or "Yak". Probably tourist art, this is nicely framed and the mat is clean, making for a decorative and inexpensive Asian accent for the home.
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Pastel : Pre 1920 item #1419552 (stock #JB02285)
Pastel on paper drawing of an attractive young blue-eyed, red-haired girl in white blouse with aqua bandana, apparently unsigned, 18 1/4" by 15" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 22 1/4" in a modern gold frame with blue green mat and inner fillet. The drawing was purchased in Newport, Rhode Island, the seller telling me it came out of an estate there, where it was suggested to him that the artist was Rhode Island impressionist artist Helena Sturtevant (1872-1946), but it is unlikely that that could be...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Oil : N. America : American : Pre 1900 item #1419553 (stock #JB02287)
Coastal seascape painting on pebbly surface old gray art board, likely the California coast but possibly Maine, circa early twentieth century, unsigned, measuring 7" by 17" (14 1/2" by 25" in its interesting blackish with reddish design frame). The work and framing is very presentable as-is, with just very slight wear to the frame. At the left edge one can see where the portion hidden by framing is fresher in color; therefore we can state that a cleaning would remove the somewhat yellowed varn...
All Items : Fine Art : Prints : Etchings : Pre 1950 item #1419554 (stock #JB02301)
Etching on paper, 11 3/4" by 13 1/2" as simply framed, the scene silhouetted ships in the harbor, the rising sun and new day ahead suggested by etched lines in the sky, pencil titled at margin "Dawn Portland Harbor" and signed at lower right and dated there 1915. The artist, Massachusetts-born PHILIP LITTLE (1857-1942) was a highly regarded impressionist American painter and etcher, an artist who had a truly American vision as he was not educated in Europe. After considering entering his fathe...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) not many in color, this is a fine image in crayon on paper, 11 1/4" by 15" in the oak frame without mat, signed at lower left by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Considering the subject matter of this drawing, I would think i...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal on paper, 13 3/4" by 16 1/2" as inexpensively framed without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Considering the subject matter of this drawing, I would think it li...
All Items : Fine Art : Mixed Media : Pre 1960 item #1419558 (stock #JB02338)
Monotype on paper (where the artist "draws" the image on a sheet of glass, after which the glass plate is very carefully pressed against paper in order to produce an image), 5 3/8" by 7 7/8" (the image), the unframed sheet 7 3/4" by 9 1/2", signed in pencil at lower right margin by listed American artist MARION GRAY TRAVER (1892-1964). This a landscape in perhaps early spring or late fall, with muted pastel colors making for a harmonious and pleasing image. Traver was born in Elmhurst, New Yor...

Original unframed etching on paper, 8 1/8" by 12 3/8" inside the mat (the sheet 10" by 14"), signed in the plate and dated there 42, and pencil signed in the nearby lower right margin by the noted American printmaker LUIGI LUCIONI (1900-1988). **ONE OF SEVERAL PRINTS BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**, this is no doubt a Vermont landscape scene, as Lucioni's prints largely deal with the classic mountain scenery, barns and farms of that rural state. The title is "Two Silos", and this was issued for the A...
