The Boydell Gallery of paintings from Shakespeare must have been an amazing site in fashionable London in the early 19th century. The publisher, John Boydell, commissioned some of the leading artists of the day to paint scenes from Shakespeare and to display the paintings at the publishers Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall. The Gallery published large prints after the paintings in a portfolio that reached 72 prints...

A beautifully limned miniature portrait painting by Elkanah Tisdale. The sitter, though unknown, is a handsome young man dressed in a black coat. The painting measures 3" by 2", and is in superb condition, with no chips, cracks, bowing, paint loss, or restoration. It is housed in a later metal case.

Few miniatures by Tisdale are known to exist, and with very rare exception, are, as is the case here, unsigned...

Berthe Morisot 1841-1895 French This is a very fine original drypoint etching by French Impressionist Berthe Morisot. This etching created and printed in 1889 is the second state of two. Printed on wove type paper this is a fine impression prior to the later impressions where the cancellation holes were filled. The image measures 7 1/2X5 1/2 inches. Unsigned as issued, nicely framed, in fine condition. A rich impression. A fine image of Berthe Morisot drawing with her daughter...

A rather elegant landscape painting with a modern feeling, the predominating colors subdued yet elegant grays and earth tones, signed rather illegibly with a European hand at lower right corner and dated there 53. The unframed work on canvas measures 23 1/2" by 31 1/2". Signature looks something like "Oltarini" or "Ott....." or "Ult....." but despite years of trying to figure this out I have not succeeded...

A PAIR of paintings of figures dressed traditionally, the larger 12" by 9 1/2" (17 1/4" by 14 1/2" framed), the smaller 9 3/4" by 6 3/4" (15" by 11 3/4" framed), one signed in red and dated 1991, the other just dated 1990, but both have ink writing on a margin paper that shows as "Byklasang 1990" (or, By Klasang?). These appear to be of Thai, Laotian, or other Southeast Asian origin, possibly Burmese (Myanmar). I do not appear to be able to tie them to a known artist...

An old unframed watercolor of an Asiatic-looking man in traditional clothing, with pencil writing in Russian at right including the date 19.II.1920. A Russian-speaker informs me that there is no name of an artist, but that the subject is identified as a Buryat. I take from online information: "The Buryat people are descended from various Siberian and Mongol peoples that inhabited the Lake Baikal Region including Kurykans, who are also the ancestors of the Siberian Turkic speaking Yakuts...

By a National Academician and painting companion of Emil Kosa, here is a large watercolor (21" by 26 1/2"-----28" by 34" as framed) painting of an old style Southern California large wood dwelling structure, signed at lower right by noted artist GEORGE GIBSON (1904-2001). The old house with straggling palm outside certainly resembles some of the picturesque old structures near downtown Los Angeles that were so often the subject of Kosa's works...

A charming, signed, pastel portrait by Dorothy Colles (1917-2003) who was (according to an obituary published in the Independent newspaper) "gifted in portraits of children". This picture was drawn circa 1963 (please see our other Colles picture) and was a commissioned piece for an advertising poster. Dorothy Colles has exhibited through the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painting. Condition - excellent. The picture 20 inches by 17.7 inches (51cm x 45cm)...

A Harbor Scene oil on canvas by Jaqui McBride, a pupil of John Court 15”x27”, frame size 18x30”

Old circa 1940's chalk portrait drawing of a young woman with red hair and striking light eyes, 22" by 16" (27" by 20 1/2" framed in green metal strip frame), apparently unsigned. This is one of several drawings I encountered by (I believe) the same artist. Two other drawings were signed, but illegibly, so the identity of the artist is a mystery. I think the paper might have been rolled at one time as under certain raking light conditions one can see soft horizontal, roughly parallel creases...

An example of the 1960's poster by the prestigious Galerie Berggruen in Paris, printed on the occasion of the exhibition of works by Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. The work pictured is Klee's 1930 watercolor "Spectre d'un Guerrier". The poster, printed by Jacomet, Paris, measures 27 1/2" by 19 1/2", and is in a silvery metal frame at present. The gray and light washy blue and silver and black make an elegant modern statement. Condition appears excellent (not examined out of frame)...

Oil or acrylic on canvasboard abstract painting, larger size at 29" by 41" as framed, signed at lower right "KAYE". I am reminded of some of the works of Kandinsky or perhaps several of the Russian early 20th century avant-garde and Constructivism artists, such as Ivan Kliun, Mikhail Larionov, Kazimir Malevich, Alexandra Exter, and El Lissitsky. This work is signed by the artist lower right and is titled lower left "Portuguese Jewish Cemetery 11th Street N.Y." This is a view of an ancient Sephardic cemetery in New York, or rather of what was left of it after most of it was destroyed by road construction. A great work by an elusive proponent of the white line technique...

This is an original etching and aquatint print with embossing on a heavy, quality handmade paper, the sheet 19 1/2" by 26", (currently unframed), the work titled "The White Nile", signed in pencil at lower right and numbered 44/125 at lower left. The total edition (including proofs?) may have been 250.
