Found recently in Maine, this is an antique oil on board painting, 12" by 14 3/4" as framed, unsigned, the subject purple grapes and a ripe peach, the autumnal grape leaf suggesting the season of harvest, all on a marble ledge or table, with a distant view beyond. The gray academy board, style and framing suggest a date of execution of about 1880. The painting is very American in feeling, bordering on folk art as there's a naivete. The frame has wear and an obvious loss at lower left corner...

Drypoint on wove paper print, "La Petite Boudeuse" (translating as "the little sulk/sullen one"), 1905, pencil signed at lower right margin near the blindstamp of Edouard Sagot, Editeur, Paris, and numbered at lower left "No. 18", by famous French cubist painter and printmaker JACQUES VILLON (1875-1963). Villon, one of three brothers, (one of them the famous Marcel Duchamp), worked early on in the style of Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec...

Attractive watercolor on quality watercolor paper painting of a Mediterranean style estate with red tiled roof, tall cypress trees and exquisite ironwork and stonework, 12 1/2" by 19" (18" by 25" framed), signed at lower left by French artist "L. SEILLARD". There is a small listing for the artist, and some trail of watercolors and a painting or two in the auction records...

Early watercolor on paper of flowers, I think petunias, in a ceramic vessel, 11" by 14", 17 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right indecipherably, and possibly dated 1901. I believe the artist is likely listed, considering the quality of the drawing. The paper was laid long ago on a board, as shown. Condition of the image area is excellent, with colors true and not faded.

This is a PAIR of color aquatints, each 8 1/2 by 12" inside the mat, 13 1/4" by 17" as framed, the subjects Notre Dame cathedral and the Seine in Paris, and the flower market at the Madeleine, each numbered at lower left out of editions of 500 and signed at lower right in pencil, by the noted French 20th century impressionist painter CHARLES BLONDIN (1913-1991)...

Old, antique oil on fine weave canvas laid on board painting of trees, distant small structures and a wooden footbridge in the foreground crossing a stream, 17 3/4" by 23 3/4" (23" by 29" as framed), apparently unsigned, and likely executed at the end of the 19th century. The rather naïve painting is very mellow and easy to live with; a classic antique American old landscape. The surface is evenly soiled, consistent with age, giving the painting that old patina...

Oil on canvas painting of a traditional German house or cottage in a forested landscape, 20" by 28" on the stretchers, 23" by 31" as framed, signed at lower right by artist "M. Lichtmann" and dated there 1920. The painting is beautifully executed, though there is very little information on the artist. There is stable craquelure, and a slight drip of foreign matter at center left, though the painting can be placed on the wall as-is.

Oil on canvasboard painting of the famous white Sacre Coeur church in Montmartre, 19" by 23" as framed, signed at lower left "M. Plagnier" or similar, created circa 1960's. At center bottom is "Paris, Sacre Coeur". This is a kitschy sort of painting that will grace your mid century interior. Condition is excellent.

Oil on canvas still life of red roses on a table with ceramic vessel, 17" by 39" as framed. The painting is executed in the Victorian style, but I think it probably dates to the final years of the 19th century or early years of the 20th. I cannot find a signature. There is a framer's stamp on the stretcher from Grand Rapids, Michigan, giving some hint as to its origin perhaps. Also the corner keys are of the post-1885 style...

This is a difficult to describe painting----we see a beach on a summer's day, the blue sea beyond; budding clouds, a spiky yucca at left, and what look at first like children's sandbox toys in the sand, until it appears that maybe they're not children's sandbox toys. The "tower" at right looks more like a Greek islands windmill, the "sail" a takeoff from the yucca. There's also a starfish, a bucket, a brightly colored striped beach ball--and a difficult to make out signature...

Poster of 1986, "EGE ART LINE TOUR", 27 1/2" by 19 3/4", unframed, hand signed in somewhat faded marker by the noted Danish modern artist, PER ARNOLDI (1941-). This offset poster is not in great condition, having been tightly rolled for a long time, and it is dusty and has some digs in the paper, and edge damage as shown (what appears as diagonal scratch at upper right is light reflecting in scratch on the Plexi)...

Gouache on paper drawing of a snowy mountain landscape with low structures depicted almost cubist style in the middle distance, apparently unsigned, circa mid 20th century, 12 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the mat, 21" by 24" as framed. The cubistic handling of the houses reminds of artists like Andrew Dasburg and other New Mexico modernists, but this is just a guess. The colors are fresh and quite vigorous. The drawing is taped along the edges to a backing.

Drawing in blue ink and watercolor, 14" by 11", in an inexpensive temporary protective frame, unsigned, a second drawing of a female head on the reverse. Judging from the appearance, hairstyle, this probably dates to before World War II. The anonymous artist created an interesting study with skilled use of shadow and line. Allow for a few reflections in the image, appearing as a dark shadow in a few images...

A large oil on canvas abstract painting featuring dynamic spiky imagery, measuring 38 1/2" by 28 1/2" in its original thin strip frame. The work is signed and dated 1969. The artist was born in 1938 and graduated from National Taiwan Normal University, and later on studied in the U.S. Besides from creating art, Yang has established galleries in the U.S. and Taiwan, as well as participating in international art exhibitions...

Beautifully executed in black and gray with minimal color, understated still life of an old style tin coffee pot, cooking pot, and white cup, 8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat, 15 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed. There is possibly a monogram in lower right corner but I cannot attach it to any particular artist...

Vintage watercolor painting of the famous miniature drawbridge in the far western part of the island (Somerset Parish), actually signed twice at lower right "Worcester" or (less likely) "Norcester", and dated "42". I am so far unable to connect this to a known, listed artist working in the islands. The work measures 12" by 16" as framed...

When I first saw this I thought it might be an image of Obama, in the style of Shepard Fairey, who created the now-famous "Hope" image. Upon closer examination I saw that it was obviously older, circa 1960's, judging from the label on the frame, which gives the artist as a Jim Moran of Visalia, California. The subject remains to me a mystery, but I wonder if it might be a famous 1960's African-American activist---or then again it might not be a black subject at all. There's an "Op-Art" elemen...

Unusually fresh and well preserved watercolor on paper painting of a pond in a wooded area, spring wildflowers in the foreground, 13 3/4" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, signed at lower right and dated there 1908 by the noted New England artist and teacher HENRY WEBSTER RICE (1853-1934). Rice was born in Maine, the son of a carriage maker. A pupil of Ross Sterling Turner, he went on to become a much beloved watercolorist and instructor. Rice was a member of the Boston Soc...
