A charming little drawing, exceptionally well-traveled, and with a story to tell: pencil on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 3/4" inside the present mat opening, 12 1/2" by 15 3/8" as framed, not signed, but with inscription "Cesanne Aug. 13/74" at lower right, and "copper buckets" at lower left. And, on the backing, written in a modern hand: "Purchased at Kingston, Jamaica Municipal Art Museum/The date is 1874--purchased previous to 1974. Probably a sketch of town fountain in rural France...

A quite old pencil drawing on thin card, 8 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the mat, 13" by 10 1/4" framed (no glass), apparently by a "Grandmother Stevenson" according to a notation on the reverse side of framing materials...

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing, very simply framed just for protection purposes (no glass), measuring 15 1/2" by 19 1/2", signed at lower left, not dated but probably 1940's. The subject appears to be a European village with figures. The drawing is by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968)...

Portrait of a Lord signed by Thomas Bridgton ARCHA, 1840. Graphite on Paper. Frame size 23 x 19.5"

By the well regarded Belgian artist JACQUES HOTE (1939-1986), this is a highly worked, detailed ink drawing on Japan tissue-type paper, measuring 8 1/2" by 11 1/4" (13 1/2" by 15 1/2" simply framed, no glass). The work is signed at lower right and dated there March 22,1969. The figures, caricatures, really, are quite strange, many with exaggerated Gallic noses; the subject/message of the drawing is not clear to me, but it likely lies in the realm of politics and satire and social commentary...

Original Victorian mourning graphite drawing of a dog protecting child from a raven. Signed in pencil by artist. In very good condition. Not inspected out of frame, but there is some age related foxing around the bird. Measures in frame 27" x 21".

An accomplished ink drawing of three women and a male flute player at right, after Pablo Picasso, signed in pencil at lower right by the famous international art forger, ELMYR DE HORY (1906-1976). The 13 3/4" by 18 1/4" work (20 1/4" by 25" in interesting framing incorporating mirrors in the margin areas) is a fine example of the work of De Hory, the Hungarian-born man who went on to become perhaps the world's most famous art forger by mid century...

Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Pencil drawing on paper by the important Russian-American artist DAVID BURLIUK (1882-1967), purchased out of a Berkshires estate in Massachusetts. The drawing measures 14 1/2" by 8 3/4" (21" by 14" framed), the lady in soft pencil and the ear study at right in blue colored pencil...

PAIR OF signed ink drawings with pencil underneath, each 7 1/2" by 6 1/2" and 13 1/2" by 11 1/2" as identically framed, the subjects famous clipper ships of the 19th century "Gamecock" and "Cutty Sark", each bearing a signature at lower right that could be interpreted as a "G" inside a square. Found in Maine, and said to have come from a Kennebunkport home, the artist who created the drawings might remain a mystery...

was introduced by Alfred Stieglitz at his 291 Gallery and along with John Marin,Arthur Dove and others were the earliest modernist artist in the United States.Biography[edit] Carles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1900 and 1907. He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910...

Something of a mystery, this is a very interesting soft pencil drawing of a young woman, 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 15" framed), signed indecipherably at lower right and dated there 1931. Try as I might, I have absolutely come to a dead end when it comes to figuring out this signature. Adjacent to that signature an inscription reads "Baroness Leonnie Perraja"...

Circa 18th century ink on paper European drawing, 11 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the inner framing enclosure, 24 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, the subject a coastal village with small boat landing, the tiny figures going about their lives on shore and in the boats, and a classic old sailing ship just making it into the image at left, signed in the lower left corner "Jac. A__". The drawing is on laid paper that was laid down on a board...

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his peak period in the 1920's is graphite and gouache on paper. It is 34.5cm h by 25cm w in a beautiful frame 55cm h by 45cm w. It is signed lower right F. L. 22 and inscribed "A mon cher Ami Albert Fratellini cordialement F Leger". There is some wear on the edges of the paper as can be seen but no damage to the image...

Ink on paper, double-sided drawing of cowboys and their horses, 7 7/8" by 10 1/4" inside the present mat (13" by 16" as framed), unsigned, but acquired in Yucca Valley from close friends of the artist who obtained much of his work after his 2005 passing. This is a vigorous and spontaneous work by an obviously very talented artist of the American west. Colt's works have been sold at Bonhams auctions of California art, and Santa Fe dealers offer his work alongside the best of western artists. T...

An old ink drawing of Carmel Mission in Central California, signed at lower left C Walker, or C F Walker, and dated there 1925. Measurements 4 1/2" by 3 3/4" (10 3/4" by 9 1/4" in pleasing, old, likely-original frame). There is a listing for Cush Walker born 1909 which would suggest the artist was only 16 at the time this was created, or, there is another listed "Clarence Walker" of Oakland who was creating charcoal and pen and ink drawings for the Federal Art Project around this time, so this...
