An elegant, black ink on white paper drawing of the heart of Montmartre in Paris, the famous Place du Tertre, where to this day artists endure ten year waiting lists to secure a spot outdoors to create the works tourists love to buy. This beautiful drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "Dieter Gly(xx)" and is dated there 1958. It is in excellent condition, considering it is over sixty years old. Simply framed in black strip, it is ready for the wall...
A finely worked sepia ink drawing of a Paris street scene, titled at top "Eglise et Seminaire St. Nicolas du Chardonnet", signed at lower right "Delaunay" and dated there 1867. The 6 1/2" by 7 1/2" drawing (11" by 13 1/4" as framed) features a Roman Catholic church in the fifth Arrondissement, on the south bank of the Seine, sometimes known as the Latin Quarter. The Pantheon and Sorbonne are located in this district, south of Notre Dame...
A pen and ink with grey wash drawing on laid paper of mostly sail boats in what appears to be an estuary with a substantial building in the distance and an expansive sky framed in an older, probably early 20th century, mat and worn gilt frame. On the back of the drawing in pencil are various writings including, “Van de Velde” in the upper left corner. Though the writing is considerably later than the drawing it is a solid attribution to the Van de Velde family of painters...
A wonderful landscape drawing in graphite by CARLES, measuring about 4” x 6” on paper, …… Carles was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1900 and 1907. He studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase. In 1907 he traveled to France where he remained until 1910...
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch of a dockside building in New England, in brush and ink on paper, the drawing itself 13 3/4" by 16", signed at lower right and dated there '58, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...
Something of a mystery, this is a very interesting soft pencil drawing of a young woman, 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 15" framed), signed indecipherably at lower right and dated there 1931. Try as I might, I have absolutely come to a dead end when it comes to figuring out this signature. Adjacent to that signature an inscription reads "Baroness Leonnie Perraja"...
An original drawing of early twentieth century biplane and car, 9" by 12" (17 1/2" by 20 1/2" framed), signed at lower right "Lantz". The work is most likely for an advertisement, for publication. The unusual name makes it tempting to link this to the famed Woody Woodpecker artist Walter Lantz (1899-1994)---and it was found in Southern California, where he worked at the Hollywood studios----but the signature is dissimilar and the work is not the cartoon art for which he is so well known...
Pencil on paper drawing of two men who appear to be having a serious disagreement, the top hatted figure at left about to swing his cane into the other, all while a woman in bonnet watches from rear left in horror. It's a whimsical, humorous piece, measuring 8 3/4" by 7 1/4" inside the mat, 16" by 15" framed. The paper is very thin and delicate, and has acquired a few noticeable folds and creases in its more than 150 years, as shown. The paper is NOT laid down...
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing, very simply framed just for protection purposes (no glass), measuring 15 1/2" by 19 1/2", signed at lower left, not dated but probably 1940's. The subject appears to be a European village with figures. The drawing is by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968)...
A white ink on tan paper line drawing of a young Polynesian woman, signed at lower left and dated there 1956, by the well-known, important Hawaiian modernist artist MADGE TENNENT (1889-1956). The work measures 12" by 9" and is currently unframed, protected just in a sleeve, the backing bearing a rubber stamp of Juniper Arts, Honolulu, Hawaii. Tennent was born in England and led a long and distinguished life in the fine arts...
Abstract pencil/charcoal on paper - estate stamped 'Ramstonev'. This work was done during the late 1930's as part of the 'Cooperative' project in the New Hope, Pa. modern art community. Charles Ramsey, Louis Stone and Charles Evans worked collectively on drawings and paintings during this time...
An original drawing of a standing cowboy, executed on thin tracing-style paper, with estate stamp at lower right of noted Arizona artist CURTIS WINGATE (1926-1982). The drawing, 18" by 9" inside the current mat, is very sketchy, as if perhaps a very preliminary study for a finished watercolor or painting. Wingate was born in Dennison, Texas and spent most of his life in Arizona after moving there from California. He was a traditional western painter, who studied with William Schimmel and was ...
A PAIR of ink sketch drawings, one fully signed, the subject female nudes, executed in brown ink, measuring 10" by 6" (18" by 14" nicely framed in gold), the smaller work, (4 1/4" by 3 1/2", and 12" by 11" framed) a black ink sketch, signed with initials, of a standing woman in full-length dress with poofy sleeves. The artist is MARCEL-LENOIR (1872-1931), born with the name Jules Oury in Montauban, southwestern France. The artist was in Paris by 1889 studying at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs a...
Original Victorian mourning graphite drawing of a dog protecting child from a raven. Signed in pencil by artist. In very good condition. Not inspected out of frame, but there is some age related foxing around the bird. Measures in frame 27" x 21".
Unsigned Miniature Lithograph, English. View of country Harbor framed measuring 7x8” Image measures 3 x 4 1/2“
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in soft pencil on paper, the drawing itself 14 1/2" by 15 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Hughes exhibited widely (even at the Paris Salons)...
By noted South African artist, Otto Klar (born in Austria, 1908-1994), this drawing depicts a group of huts, some figures, and hills in the background. In a simple wood frame, it measures 10 3/4" by 12 5/8" (sight size 6" by 8"), and is inscribed on the back, "Christmas South Africa, 1977, Gift from Otto Klar, Dec 2nd". In pencil, on buff colored paper, frame and double matting are clearly original, and the drawing appears to be in excellent condition. Otto Klar was born in Austria, attended ...
An old ink drawing of Carmel Mission in Central California, signed at lower left C Walker, or C F Walker, and dated there 1925. Measurements 4 1/2" by 3 3/4" (10 3/4" by 9 1/4" in pleasing, old, likely-original frame). There is a listing for Cush Walker born 1909 which would suggest the artist was only 16 at the time this was created, or, there is another listed "Clarence Walker" of Oakland who was creating charcoal and pen and ink drawings for the Federal Art Project around this time, so this...
