A trio of drawings I have owned for about thirty years---all unsigned, one on tracing paper, the other on heavier paper, and double-sided, the subject apparently Indian Rock, a favorite subject of artists since the 19th century when they visited the Naragansett Bay area of Rhode Island. One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

A charcoal drawing of Bellaire, Michigan (northern part of the state), signed at lower right and dated 1936, and titled there "Bellaire, Mich.", (and titled on reverse backing "Evening Landscape" (crossed out, and nearby artist signature also crossed out), by well known Michigan artist CHARLES CULVER (1908-1967). This is a rather early work, created when the artist would have been in only his late 20's...

Antique drawing in charcoal on paper of four women who appear to be in surf or sand at water's edge, apparently unsigned, probably European and 19th century. The figures are somewhat heroic, as if survivors. Possibly a preparatory study for a painting, this work's authorship is unknown, but obviously the artist was talented and probably even listed and known. The sheet, 8 1/4" by 14", is seemingly glued to an illustration board backing...

Russian born artist who worked for the WPA, and in 1939 was commissioned for a mural for the department of Justice in Washington DC. His work and papers are at Yale University and some of his works are in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This work is graphite on paper, in a silver deco frame that measures 18x29 inches…....

This is a finely drawn portrait of a young woman with distinctive ringlet hair of the period, her name given at bottom as "Elizabeth Hartshorne", the work signed at lower right margin "Sketch by A T Agate 1837". The work, measuring 7 3/4" by 6 1/4" plus strip frame, is a very rare example of the work of the American artist ALFRED THOMAS AGATE (1812-1846). Agate studied with his brother Frederick Styles Agate. From 1831 to 1838, as a very young man, he was in New York City...

Pencil on paper drawing, 6 1/4" by 15", unframed, signed at lower right and dated there 1991, by the noted contemporary sculptor, ceramicist, designer and painter PETER SHIRE (1947-). This complex modern drawing is imaginative, three dimensional, and whimsical, and could only have been created by a true artist. Shire was becoming known on the art scene with his now famous teapot sculptures in the early 1980's, attracting the attention of Memphis figure Ettore Sottsass...

A vintage study in charcoal of an infant on its back, 12" by 15" (16" by 19" framed), signed at lower right with what appears as "H Collins", and dated adjacent Sept. 14, 1953. I do not see a listed name that would correspond with this name or variants of it. The study is artistic, reminiscent of timeless Italian Renaissance drawings. There is age toning of the paper and some lighter, whitish areas at lower left, above the infant's left arm, and at lower right.

Original ink on paper drawing of four ducks in flight over a swamp or marsh, circa 1930's, signed at lower right with initials "P.Z.", which appears to correspond with inscription on backing "Painted or sketched by Paul Zeeze". At top on backing, is written "James Zeeze". Online research suggests the name may be found in Minnesota, which would make sense with duck habitat. Measures 10" by 6 1/4" inside the mat and 14 3/4" by 10 3/4" in black strip frame.

Amedeo Modigliani, Livorno, Italy, 1884- 1920. This beautiful Cariatide is oil pencil on tan paper, apprx 16.5"H by 11.5"W, signed upper left " a Paul Modigliani", Verso original Modigliani Studio card, Gallery Bernard card and original Description label. Condition: paper laid on cardboard, edges fraying and some fading. It is likely that this is a drawing used in Modigliani's studio and that the Paul is Paul Alexander Modigliani’s Physician.
