This is a beautifully executed work in charcoal, 18" by 15" (19" by 16" as framed), the subject a young girl, staring out at the viewer, likely wearing her school uniform, circa 1930's or 1940's, I am thinking. Unfortunately there is no signature. When I first saw this I thought it possible it might be by a Taos and Santa Fe master.......and I held on to it for many years, thinking I could run into another work that would unlock the mystery...

Original unframed drawing on old Brownie art board, in ink and marker with hint of pencil underneath in a few spots, each box measuring 2 15/16" by 3 1/2", dated "3-20" and signed at far right "Schulz". Also appearing is "(COPY) NOT FOR REPRODUCTION" and the name "j. f. bufton" on the bench next to the bat. Believing that the work could possibly be an authentic work by Schulz, I have researched the drawing through the Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California...

A charming little drawing, exceptionally well-traveled, and with a story to tell: pencil on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 3/4" inside the present mat opening, 12 1/2" by 15 3/8" as framed, not signed, but with inscription "Cesanne Aug. 13/74" at lower right, and "copper buckets" at lower left. And, on the backing, written in a modern hand: "Purchased at Kingston, Jamaica Municipal Art Museum/The date is 1874--purchased previous to 1974. Probably a sketch of town fountain in rural France...

This is a superb charcoal on paper drawing laid to an old board, signed at upper right (look carefully to find it, in the final photo) Ernest W. Scanes. The paper measures 17" by 22". I would date the work to the 1930's or 1940's, judging from the excellent WPA regionalism style. Indeed, this greatly resembles a number of "AAA" (Associated American Artists) lithograph prints of the period...

Large charcoal on paper drawing of a head, 23" by 19" (35 1/2" by 29 1/2" in oversized framing), signed at lower right "W. NASH" in all capital letters. This appears to be the head of a woman, perhaps Orientalist subject matter. I speculated that this might be a work by the noted Santa Fe, New Mexico modernist artist Willard Nash (1898-1943), but he did not sign like this, so far as I can determine, and the subject matter would be unusual for him...

A nicely executed charcoal drawing of a nude young woman, 20" by 14" inside the mat, 31" by 25" as framed in black wood, signed at lower right and dated there "12. V. 2006". The handwriting appears to be European---perhaps, I am thinking, Greek. There is a hint of pale color in the face area. Condition is excellent. A few insects managed to get in under the glass at lower left margin, where they expired.

An ink on paper drawing of a man holding a cigarette, unsigned, 6 3/8 " by 5 3/4" inside the mat (12 1/2" by 10 1/2" simply framed). When I first saw this my thoughts drifted to accomplished ink line drawings by the American master artist Ben Shahn, or, possibly, German Expressionism (Georg Grosz, etc.). The drawing was found in Oregon, with no further information available. It probably dates to about 1950 give or take a few years, and is probably American...

A watercolor on paper of a castle on the water with a boat and three women walking on the shingle in the foreground, a row boat on the water and the castle in the distance against the sky. There are numerous other watercolors that are attributed to him, but probably not by him...

A well-drawn pencil scene of the French coast of western Brittany, titled on reverse "Pecheurs a Douarnenez", signed at lower right by living French artist BRUNO DU TERTRE D'ELMARCQ. Douarnenez is one of the scenic towns much favored by artists since the 19th century. When I first saw this work I was reminded of the beach scenes of Eugene Boudin, the famed late 19th century French artist. The tiny figures, sails, and poetry all remind of that French master...

This is a fine pencil drawing of a Victorian style wood home, 16" by 11 1/2" (24 3/4" by 18 3/4" framed), signed at lower right "David" and dated there '73. One is reminded of Edward Hopper's haunted, lonely dune houses or even the infamous back-lot Bates Motel house from the movie "Psycho" where Anthony Perkins did his thing. Condition is excellent. Found in San Francisco, the city where many treasured gingerbread houses of Victorian times still stand.

Very old small pencil drawing of a town scene, 3 1/2" by 3 5/8" (11 1/2" by 10" framed), unsigned, and the artist and origin unknown. It is simply an antique drawing. Someone thought enough of it to have a hand-drawn ornate mat on gray-blue paper. A church tower appears at center and a tree at left, and two tiny figures at lower right. There is a mysterious red circle stamped on the reverse; difficult to say if it may be a collector's stamp.

An original botanical watercolor drawing of unknown age, apparently unsigned, featuring leaves and insects, one likely a wasp or similar. The work is very clean and ready for the wall. Some slight brownish toning of the paper seems to be accentuated by the camera; it does not appear that way to the naked eye. The attention paid to detail, by the artist, is impressive. Sepia ink on paper drawing, 5 3/4" by 3 3/4" inside a red mat opening, 11" by 8 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left and dated there 1864, by listed English woman artist SARAH LOUISA KILPACK (1840-1909). This is a sweet, beautiful little drawing by an artist who seems to have created mostly coastal landscapes in oil, especially along the English Channel or around the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey. This would be an early work created when she would have been in only her mid 20's. The ...

Accomplished drawing of a young mother holding her baby, painted and with pencil underneath, unsigned, but on the reverse is a printed label of the Kherwadi Social Welfare Association of Mumbai, India, giving the name of the artist as Savita Shershing Ashiwal, age 9 years. The work being so advanced, it is difficult to believe that it could have been created by a young child. Most certainly the style resembles that of some very well-known Indian artists, including Maqbool Fida Husain and Jamin...

A nicely executed good-sized pastel drawing, 19" by 23" (24" by 28" framed), the subject a fast-looking high-end sailboat off a coastline, manned by a number of figures. I would estimate the age as circa 1960's or 1970's. Framed behind detail-dulling non-glare glass, which was common during those years. Frame shows wear, drawing is in excellent condition. Signature "Mather" is at lower left.

One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a fine image in soft pencil and ink on paper, the drawing itself 10" by 13 1/2", in a simple frame without mat, signed with initials at right and dated '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Hughes exhibited widely ...
