An old pastel drawing of a New England landscape in winter, 11 1/2" by 17 1/2" (18 1/2" by 22" framed), signed at lower right "MORRIS". The work is after the noted American artist GEORGE HENRY DURRIE (1820-1863). The heartwarming scene of Americana includes yellow house at right, yellow and red outbuildings, sleighs, split rail fence, tiny figures and bare trees. It could also be in imitation of Currier and Ives lithographs of Durrie's works...

A fine landscape drawing in pastel by a skilled hand, Swiss-born artist MAXIM (MAXIMILIAN) SEIBOLD. The drawing measures 9 1/4" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4" by 16 1/2" in attractive probably original old gold framing---very light wear). Seibold was a competent and talented artist, very active around the year 1920, who seems to have left behind little biographical information. Born in Switzerland, he evidently came to America at least by the 'teens, as drawings of Florida and elsewhere are known...

A very accomplished pastel drawing in high key tropical-style colors, featuring a bird's eye view of the landscape around San Gimignano, the popular ancient Tuscan hilltop town in Italy, southwest of Florence, much beloved and frequented by tourists from around the world. The work, 13" by 10 1/4" (20" by 16" framed) is signed at lower right by contemporary artist Helen C. Butler. On the backing is a printed sticker of the artist giving the title. Excellent fresh, clean condition...

A pastel drawing of waves breaking on a beach as two gulls cruise overhead, signed at lower left by artist H. Stewart. The work measures 10 1/2" by 13 3/4" (19" by 25" in gold frame with some wear). There are several possibilities as to the identity of the (likely American) artist but even if listed the artist would not be major. This can be enjoyed as the skilled depiction of a familiar and timeless scene.......ocean waves breaking on a beach...

Large size (39" by 27 1/2" framed) pastel of hollyhocks in bloom, apparently unsigned, drawn on canvas. The work probably dates to the first third of the 20th century, when the flower was more popular and more commonly planted around houses. Most pastels are on paper, so a work on canvas is more unusual. Due to the size and the glass, a local Southern California buyer would be very welcomed. Except for a small bit of contact with the glass, the drawing is in fine condition.

This is a fine pastel drawing of a young girl of about 3 looking directly at the viewer, the work signed at lower right by the Canadian master artist NICHOLAS DE GRANDMAISON (1892-1978). It measures 17 3/4" by 14" inside the mat (28 1/2" by 24" as framed). The artist is considered an important contributor to Canadian art history, his pastel drawings of Native peoples bringing into five figures at auctions. De Grandmaison was born in Moscow to nobility...

Beautifully executed pastel in subtle white, gray and tan, this is an image of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in snow, signed at lower left by artist R. A. Badenhop. I am unable to locate an artist of this name, despite the obvious quality of the work, which measures 20" by 16 1/2" (27" by 23 1/2" framed). The empty streets, teeming with tourists and visitors on more pleasant summer days, make for an unusual sight in this famous and crowded section of Paris...

A vintage, old, pastel on paper drawing of old steep-roofed houses in a mountain landscape, 10 1/2" by 15 1/2" (14 1/2" by 19" as framed, no glass), signed at lower right corner with initials that appear as "SHC.". The work probably dates to the 1920's or 1930's, judging from the style, and framing materials. The old paper has browned heavily and one can see a ghost image of the drawing on the reverse side...

A rare, historical, early pastel on heavy paper laid to card drawing of a young Zuni indian girl in Arizona, unsigned, circa late 19th century, including the original gold mat, decorated with images of tipis and spears. The work measures 18" by 12" (entire mat) and 12 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat. Sadly, the old antique work has been damaged. There is a darkened diagonal stain that extends from upper right down across the front of the face and into the hair...

A classic late 19th century American pastel of daisies on a red cloth, 10 3/4" by 15 3/4" (14 1/2" by 19 3/4" in likely original framing), apparently unsigned, the style somewhat resembling that of renowned American artist of the period Martin Johnson Heade. Condition is excellent. A very small fragment of a label remains on the frame, with "Broadway" as part of street address. That would likely but not necessarily be Broadway in New York...

Pastel drawing of a young girl seated in a chair, signed at lower right by American 20th century artist from Long Island, New York, Muriel Kahn, and dated 1967. The sheet measures 12" by 8 3/4". An inexpensive modern frame that would fit this is available at no extra charge, but the drawing will be sent between boards/paper. The signature resembling that of important American artist Wolf Kahn, and the medium being the medium for which he is best known, I looked into whether this might be by h...

Old circa 1940's chalk portrait drawing of a young woman with red hair and striking light eyes, 22" by 16" (27" by 20 1/2" framed in green metal strip frame), apparently unsigned. This is one of several drawings I encountered by (I believe) the same artist. Two other drawings were signed, but illegibly, so the identity of the artist is a mystery. I think the paper might have been rolled at one time as under certain raking light conditions one can see soft horizontal, roughly parallel creases....

Nicely drawn impressionistic drawing of fresh peaches, the leaves still attached, apparently unsigned and measuring 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" (11 1/2" by 14 1/2" framed in oak). Would look attractive in a pantry or breakfast nook. Squarish light area at top is a reflection only.

Found in eastern Maine, a fine old still life pastel, the image including an orange, dark blue grapes, a walnut in the shell, and a metal vessel. At lower right are the words "GOOD SHEPHERD BAY VIEW" (???), but no signature. Circa 1900 date of execution judging from frame, which is dark stained walnut with gilt inner fillet. Size 9 1/4" by 12 3/4" (13" by 16 1/2" framed). Allow for a few reflections and some dust on the glass.

A pastel on paper drawing of an urban alleyway with whitewashed structure and tiled roof, possibly in Mexico or other Latin country, signed at lower right by American artist "Dave M....", or similar. The work measures 14 1/2" by 10 3/4" inside the mat and 21" by 16" as framed. The artist has taken an everyday kind of scene and transformed it into a work of art. The art is in excellent condition as are the frame and mat.

An interesting pastel drawing on paper, circa 1940's, the subject a clear green glass vase of violet and blue flowers set on a round table top adjacent to a high-floor window in a big city, lacy curtains framing the scene at both sides. The envelope sitting on the table appears to have a signature on it, in the trompe l'oeil tradition of the artist signing his/her name on an envelope; but that signature despite my best efforts defies reading. The work measures 18 1/2" by 12 1/2" inside the pre...

The work measures 15" by 20 1/2" (24 1/2" by 30" framed). A contemporary pastel on paper work, the subject appearing to be the familiar and much-loved canals of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Canal boats, arching bridge and a church tower in the distance complete the scene. The work measures 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4' by 15 3/4" in simple frame, behind glass---no mat). There is no signature but the artist was able to handle a piece of chalk. The work demonstrates fine handling of the light and reflections. Coarse weave of the paper shows through--a...

For the dog fancier, an unusually charming drawing of what I believe to be perhaps a border collie or Australian Sheepdog, 13 1/2" by 10 1/2" (16" by 12 1/2" framed), signed illegibly at lower right and dated 1979. The artist was obviously talented and perhaps listed, but I cannot to date decipher the signature. The dog's expression is unusually energetic, charming, and even amusing. This is certainly among the most lifelike portrait drawings of a dog I have encountered. The drawing is in ex...

An early 20th century pastel landscape of trees and a small creek at left, 20" by 27 1/2" as framed behind glass, no mat, signed at lower right by artist H. W. Carr. This was a period of great activity in pastel landscape painting; displaying original art in one's home, instead of a mere print, was considered a symbol of status. The frame is worn, with chipping.

Contemporary pastel portrait of a contemplative young brunette, 19" by 14 1/2" (25" by 20 1/2" in gold framing), signed at lower left with what appears as "Fredric Golds" (or, "Goldstein", or "Goldey" or similar). The obviously-trained artist has demonstrated his skill with pastel. The work probably dates to the 1970's or 1980's and is in excellent condition. There is some gold loss on the frame in a few places.

An interesting pastel drawing of older high rise apartment buildings in a major city, perhaps New York, signed at lower right with initials "EM" or "EW" and dated there 1939. The work, 15" by 11" (21" by 16 1/4" in simple gold metal frame), deals very skillfully with what could potentially be quite sterile subject matter in the wrong hands. This could be seen as a commentary on the anonymity of high rise living in any city. If you live in a complex such as Peter Stuyvesant Village in New York...

Fine pastel drawing of a seated young woman, on gray-blue paper, 18 1/2" by 12 1/2" (23 1/2" by 17 1/2" in mid century white frame), unsigned. The artist was clearly very skilled but unfortunately failed to sign the work. An elegant interior is suggested by the orange pottery vessel at far right. The young lady's clothing suggests that the work could be old----maybe early 20th century, despite appearing to be quite fresh. Once again, it is difficult to determine without a date or artist name...

A beautifully executed work in pastel, 18" by 25 1/2", in a narrow metal poster-type frame behind glass with no mat, signed at upper left and dated there 1977 in Roman numerals (LXXVII)) by the noted well listed American artist SHELDON C. SCHONEBERG (1926-2013). At upper right, he titled the work "Grosvenor Park, London". The vigorously worked trees, sweep of the curved interaction of park and street, and small cars, flags and figures make for a handsome work. Schoneberg was born in Illinois ...

A pleasant pastel on paper drawing of pink roses, signed at lower right by artist Lora King and dated there '39. On the reverse backing paper the name "Lora King Arnold" is written, and again "Lora Arnold" and original $100.00 price appears. There seems to be minimal information available on the artist (online I did see a 1923-1960 lifespan that may or may not be accurate). The work measures 11 1/4" by 15" (17 1/2" by 21 1/2" in original framing). The drawing is in excellent condition overal...

A very finished, beautifully executed pastel of a middle-aged lady, she nicely coiffed and elegant in appearance, the work signed at lower right "CARLES". I have researched the work, (including contacting an acknowledged expert on well-known Pennsylvania artist Arthur Carles Jr. 1882-1952) and she does not feel it has the characteristics to enable it to be called the work of that noted American painter. It is offered as a nicely executed portrait drawing. Measurements are 6" by 5" (17 1/2" by...

A PAIR of pastel on paper drawings, each measuring 18" by 24", though they are currently in different frames, one 32" by 38", the other 27" by 32 1/2", the optical illusion making one appear larger than the other. Both works are signed with initials "CA" at bottom right. I confirmed with a Swiss auction house that they are not by Swiss artist Cuno Amiet, therefore they are offered as-is, unattributed. Most likely, they are of American origin. The artist has shown an excellent skill handling ...

Beautiful impressionist pastel drawing of a landscape in California's high desert outside Los Angeles, 12 1/2" by 19", 19 1/2 by 26 1/2" in attractive old gold strip framing (but with no glass), and signed "R W" and dated 1940 at lower right corner. Strangely, the work was found "high and dry" in Asbury Park, New Jersey---and evidently the work also spent some time in Chicago on its way east, having been...

Nicely executed impressionist pastel drawing of coastal rocks and surf, 9" by 12" (14 1/2" by 17 1/2" framed), unsigned. This came from a collection of Northern California art, including pastel drawings by Carl Sammons, so I would at least entertain the possibility that he could have been the artist, but alas, this is truly unsigned. The work is on paper laid on a board. Condition is excellent with just a little contact with the old style non-glare glass, which should be replaced. The photos...

Pastel drawing of a path among trees at day's end, 9 1/2" by 5 3/4" (13" by 9" framed), signed at lower right by artist E. W. Rost, or possibly E. Vyrost (Vyrost is a Czech surname). The work has a Tonalist or Barbizon feeling. There is an American artist Rost but with different initials, and that artist created mostly etchings.
