A pen and ink print signed W.V.V.T in the lower right corner. There is a small white spot in the right area (see photos) and dark spot above that... there is also rippling in the upper left corner-- the paper may have been pasted to a background but we have not examined it out of the frame. 12" x 16"
Original monotype by Matt Phillips (American, born in 1927 in New York City). Signed "Phillips" and dated '82 in pencil l.r. Also indistinctly titled or dedicated l.l. ("For Dede"?) 4 1/2" by 4 1/4" image alone. The full sheet measures roughly 12" by 12". In original never framed condition. Matt Phillips is a master printmaker who taught in Paris, and at Bard College in NYC. He is credited with reviving the monotype technique in the second half of the 20th century...

Yuji Abe passed away in Tokyo on 15 May. Japan art leader
Abe-san was 86 He was a dean of the modern a Japanese print world from his base at Yoseido Gallery in Ginza. He tutored many young and not so young gaijin to learn about Japanese modern prints He was a dashing suave figure in his 50s. He had been in ill health for a number of years I attach a recently restored 1961 Maki print he may have handled way back then. This print was done 50 years ago...
