This is a rare collection of black and white mounted photos I acquired from an estate in Bel Air, California some years ago, all bearing on the reverse a green stamp "From the Estate of Norman Cousins", sizes ranging from 14" by 7 1/2" to 17" by 13". Etching with color possibly hand-applied, 9" by 8 1/2" as framed, unsigned, by important French 20th century artist MARIE LAURENCIN (1885-1956). From having checked the 1981 catalog raisonne by Daniel Marchesseau, I have determined that the most official title of this work is "Fillette aux Yeux Vertes" ("Young Girl with Green Eyes", although a number of other titles are in common usage for this essually popular print)...

This is a large lithograph, 32 1/2" by 22 3/4", unframed, the subject a reclining nude in a claustrophobic room hung with framed artworks, signed at lower right in pencil by the artist WILLIAM BRICE, and numbered at lower left 5/20 examples. The work was created in 1962 and bears the blindstamp of Tamarind, as well as another unidentified blind stamp on the front and an ink stamp of a gallery, or printer, on the reverse...

Lithograph, 14" by 21" inside the mat, signed in the stone at lower right, from an unknown edition possibly of about 5,000 examples, the title "Ma de Proverbis", 1970. This is extremely clean and fresh with bright colors not having suffered any fading from light exposure. The piece is accompanied by a bright green mat and simple black metal frame of the period. Allow for reflections in glass.

Pencil signed at lower right and bearing "Artist's Proof" at lower left is this etching, 10 3/4" by 8 1/2" inside the mat, 18 3/4" by 15 3/4" as framed, by the noted late American artist JACK LEVINE (1915-2010). Levine, deceased in 2010 at the age of 95, will be remembered as an artist who bucked the modernism trends to pursue his own trail in social satire, caricature, and "Hebraism". He was born in Boston and was exposed to the grittier aspects of street life...

This is one of three research notes that were numbered 23. This one is about Work 73-2, a Maki homage to a 19th-century Chinese writer. Dan Tretiak wrote: Enigma. The original eBay seller wrote this in his listing. He really got it right. Maki’s print has the four-character phrase as done by Deng in his writing in the 19th century We confirm Deng and Maki were in sync. The arrangement of Maki’s gold seal is more used in Chinese than Japanese. In any case ENJOY

In the mid-1960s, Haku Maki was firmly launching his career as an important Japanese print maker. He did a series of prints of which a long and key series was the Alphabet A – Z. In turn, the Alphabet was the first series of what came to be many series of prints, all of which Maki called the Poem series. Prints in the Poem series continued to be produced until 1972. 5.75 x 8.5 in. ai in Japanese The white background is punctuated by a yellow sun and a red splash --true Maki style. Frame 5 shows Sanae’s careful translation and explanation of this print – and her intuition as to what Maki-san may have meant when he created this image 41 years ago.
