Oversized Chinese copperplate etching of two large white birds with prominent beaks (possibly two albatrosses) by Wu Wulong (b. 1956) titled "Under the Moon." The print is pencil-signed and titled in Chinese, dated 1986, and numbered 18/20 in the large bottom margin. Paper: 24" x 19 1/2" (image: 17 1/4" x 17 1/8"). Very good overall condition. There are a few pin holes in the upper margin. Some faint spotting and soiling is visible on the white birds, in the margins, and on the back...

A black and white photograph of snow in woods, circa 1950's or 1960's, unsigned, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" (17 1/2" by 23 1/2" in frame), recently acquired from the Beverly Hills estate of Lydia and Charlton Heston; the photo was hanging in a hallway lined with many, many photographic works. Haku Maki was a well-known Japanese print maker of the second half of the 20th century. About 20 of his workw I called Big Red and a few Big Blue or Big Green. This is one of the rare Big Blue prints. By my reckoning he did about three true Big Blues, this is one of them. In the early 1980s Haku Maki produced this unusual print, Poem 3. It has a kanji bottom margin (Mountain and Water) and is only slightly embossed. It is as if he started to do a lithograph and then decided to emboss it a bit. It is a modest-size print and not spectacular. By the time he did this print Maki had finished with embossed kanji and ceramics and was heading toward less compelling work.Poem 3 has a gold sun right center, but the print has no drama and no oomph. 15x15cm.
