Originally, this carbine was a Robbins @ Lawrence Model - 1841 Contract Rifle, and its barrel and stock were shortened to adapt this weapon to calvery use. The R&L model 1841 rifle was a well made contract rifle on the market before the Civil War. Of the 15,000 rifles made for the U.S., 2000 rifles were stored in the Baton Rouge Arsenal before the war started.
