Fine Japanese miniature garden kit, all made with natural material, ca 1940-1960, original wood box. We used a simple cardboard box as a tray with small black pebbles under. A delicate antique Chinese Tea Box with exquisitely decorated gilt relief. It has a pewter box lining with a glass knob. The lacquer shows images of a pavillion setting with trees and a border of flowers. The pewter box has a primitive etching of scholars with rocks and grasses. This large imposing Chinese porcelain vase features a landscape scene typical of those which were popular during the early Republic period. A tall pine needled tree dominates over a wide canopied tree surrounded by rock work and mountains. The surrounding waters host pagodas to which boatmen come and go. The tranquility of the vignette is surely the reason this vase decoration remained popular later in the 20th century.
