This old ceramic tray/plate is made for the Straits Chinese Community, it is of the typical pheonix design. It is an example of the nyonya ware, handpainted and used for serving tea. An English Bursley Ware bowl by Charlotte Rhead, 1940s, of square shape. Slip-glaze decoration in the Carnations or T. L. 40 pattern in blue and gilt on off-white, marbled ground. A 4" across and 2" high Byzantaware lustre English porcelain flower frog in the Winton Grimwades Tuba shape. This fine china is the American Franciscan Ivy pattern. The dinner plate is 10 3/8" in diameter, embossed, and hand-painted under glaze. It was made by the Gladding, McBean & Company circa 1948

The handling and modelling of clays in various colors necessary for the creation of this kind of art objects was a complicated procedure, mastered only by Jean Gerbino and his family in Vallauris, the French studio pottery center of the period. A pair of globular small electric bedside lamps decorated with roses hand painted by Joseph Nekola Junior and sold by Plitchta, London. Joseph, the son of Karel Nekola an original decorator at Weymss, was taught by his father to paint the well know roses. After the original factory at Weymss closed the Bovey Pottery in Devon continued to make, “Weymss Ware” with Joseph the decorator and trainer of apprentices. Plitchta was a wholesaler and exporter.

This porcelain plate was produced in England by Royal Worcester in 1933. The date codes indicate this year. It is signed by the artist E. Barker. The plate measures 10 ¾” in diameter. A brilliant array of hand painted flowers in an urn fill the center of the plate. They are realistically portrayed in fine detail. The rim of the plate is finished with an embossed band of gold. This interesting vase has a notch in it making it look a little like Pac Man, but giving it a very distinct form. However, we believe that it was created in a studio by excellent ceramicists who decorated the vase with free flowing green and blue glazes. One side has a stack of incised chevrons running down the center. The underside is marked with what appears to be W NZ VI, marks whose identity elude us. The vase has considerable heft for its size.
