An English hand painted Gaudy Welsh tea set by Allerton's, consisting of the 6" high teapot (including finial), the 5" tall large covered sugar bowl, the 4-3/4" tall milk or cream jug, four 2-1/2" tall cups and four 5-7/8" fitted saucers. Including the lids there are 13 pieces and each is handpainted with cobalt, orange, green and copper lustre. the shape and decoration are undoubtedly those of Allertons however the saucers are marked with what appear to be impressed date stamps (from 1928-29)...

The entire front surface of the plate is decorated. They have elaborate gold borders with cartouches containing urns. The centers are hand painted with scenes of Italian landscapes and water views. An English Bursley Ware bowl by Charlotte Rhead, 1940s, of square shape. Slip-glaze decoration in the Carnations or T. L. 40 pattern in blue and gilt on off-white, marbled ground. Factory mark and TL 40 = pattern number and the mark of the painter who applied the raised decoration, Mary Powell. Height "2¼/ 6 cm, width (diagonally) "4¾/ 12 cm. Condition: fine. Please note that all the little dots and accents that unfortunately look brown on the photos are really in gilt.
