Japanese early 20th century earthenware vase by SUIGETSU. The vase has 2 crabs done in high relief on the side. This type of ceramics was originated by artist Yoshikawa Tsunekata during the Meiji Period. The vase comes with TOMOBAKO, or original artist signed wooden storage box. The vase measures 6 1/4" tall by 8" in diameter.
A traditional oribe ware handled dish decorated with geometric patterns and the signature green glaze that oribe wares are known for. The green glaze used for oribe is thought be difficult to produce and only the most skilled potters can produce the green color by knowing the temperature and timing when fired. The theme of the bowl is the 3 Friends of Winter or Shochikubai (plum blossom, bamboo, and pine tree) in colored enamel against a gray ground in the center. The recessed foot has 2 character mark Fuku, meaning "good fortune" or "happiness".

Unusual set of Oribe small bowls in fish form, all signed on base with oval Oribe mark, the bases with crosshatching designs, the flowing glaze of green, tan, and rosy red hues.
Measure 5" wide and 2 3/4" deep, 1 1/2' high.
All roughly the same size, each with wonderful Oribe glaze of green over buff colored body, the green appearing with blue hints, most with the contrasting rosy red on the interiors and sides.
