Kokeshi, wooden folk toy of NE Japan. Height: 7". This is an example of "Goroujou" tradition of Iwate Prefecture. It is also a rare example of extant pre-WWII kokeshi. It was made at Yumoto Onsen by the artisan, Fujiwara Masagoro, who was born in Meiji 16 (1883!) and passed away at the age of 64 on June 12th, 1947 (Showa 22.) A sheet of "tatougami" made of recycled washi (Japanese handmade paper) used at a pawn shop. Hocked items were wrapped in this tatougami and kept. It is made of used washi with letters and kakishibu is painted for insect repellent and for moisture-resisting. The first half of the 20th century. In good condition but has one moth bite hole. 66cm x 66cm

Japanese large Cherry wood Veneer serving Tray with two(2) handles, 20" x 13" wide, 1 3/4" high rim, very interesting design of natural tree roots veneered, applied on top of the wood and lacquered on top. Bottom is black lacquered wood. This is brand new item, produced from north east region of Japan, never been used before, comes with original maker's paper box.

Yuki-boshi (snow hat) or yuki-kabuto (snow helmet) made of palm tree fiber and vegetable indigo dye cotton inside. It has washi painted with Paulownia oil for waterproof, between outside and cotton indigo lining. It is from Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district. It is said it was worn by "matagi", a hunter. The first half of the 20th century. In good condition with belts inside are left, which is rather rare. 40cm x 50cm

TOOL LIKE MORTISE-SAMPLE

Details and usage really unknown, but would be a sort of old Japanese architectural wooden tool, like size or form sample of mortise (for mortise joint with a combination of mortise and tenon). Happy first encounter, very rare find. Showa period, early-mid 20th century. Large: 14.5 x 2.5 x 3cm (5.70 x 0.98 x 1.18in), Small: 11.5 x 2.5 x 2.5cm (4.52 x 0.98 x 0.98in)...

Rare bag for back pack made of plant, possibly "suge" (Carex) but not 100% sure. It is hand-knitted with very skillful technique. Used by a mountain worker. In excellent condition. 20th century. L:38cm W:27cm

Rare Ca. 1950 pair of Japanese bronze goldfish each with water spouts. Excellent condition. Lovely blue green patina from years of being outside in a garden. Larger goldfish: 30cm long x 17cm tall x 14cm wide; smaller goldfish: 26cm long x 14cm tall x 12cm tall. Ask for shipping quote.

This kokeshi was made in the town of Toune by the artisan Yamaguchi Shuuichi, who was born on June 21, 1924 (Taisho 13.) It is not dated, but was most likely made during the 1970's or early 1980's.
