Chinese Quan Yin from the second half of the 20th century. It is made of rare aromatic Cheng Xiang wood. The figure stands statuesque and unperturbed atop a turbulent sea holding a string of beads. The robes drape gently down the figure and almost flutter in the wind. It measures 16" tall, base 5" diameter.

A rare large Ainu artisan carved Hokkaido black bear (Higuma) made from one solid piece of Japanese hardwood. Intricate carving to the fur including the underside of the bear. Eyes made of Obsidian. Minor wear.

Small statue of the face of Okame. Her round, full cheeks and Heian period hairdo give her head the silhouette of a penis. Her open mouth is in the form of a stylized vagina. Shunga of sorts.

Few casting flaws, otherwise excellent condition

This type of erotic statues are regarded as funny rather than erotic. In Japan they are called waraimono, ‘something (or someone) that makes you laugh’.

Sambaso dancer with the typical high hat (striped eboshi) with a sun disc (round circle) on each side. In his left hand he holds suzu jingle bells; his right hand, on his back, holds a fan. Single block carving (ichiboku); keyaki (zelkova) wood, carved in a faceted way, resembling ittobori, and stained dark brown.

The bronze has a fine dark patina. Very fine, expressive sculpture in naturalistic style characteristic of human representation in the Post-War period. - Signed: Yoshiaki. Japan, ca. 1960–1970. H 22.5 cm. Condition: Excellent. *****Tachikawa Yoshiaki (1918 - 2017). He began his training as a sculptor at the College for Fine Arts in Tokyo in 1940 where he remained for a period of 4 years. Written on the inside of the original box is the artists' testimonial to this piece. Carved by famed carver Terada Keitaro (artist name : Kei'in) when he was 71 and his retirement piece. Carved in Showa 29 (1954) he went into Ryozen-zan mountain in Shiga Prefecture and found the perfect wild mulberry wood for his final masterpiece. He states he put his whole spirit and soul into this piece. Signed and in excellent condition. Ask for shipping quote.
