Japanese Ambassador Ningyô. These were used as international gifts of cultural exchange. This doll has a poignant face with a compelling expression. She is a very young little girl wearing a rich dark blue kimono with pale flowers and a red obi. It is really just a wonderful doll that will surely enhance any serious doll collection. 29.25 inches, (74.5cm) tall. circa 1930's. From a widely renowned and published collection that has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum and Japan Society.

Japanese Gosho Ningyô with Samurai Attire, Signed by the 10th Generation Ningyo Artist Rozon. This master work is the results of ten generations and three centuries of ningyo artists. Japanese sosaku hanga woodblock print featuring an embossed image of a female Awaji doll puppet in profile by Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997). The artist's black ink signature is at the lower left and Saito's red seal is at the lower right portion of the image. Circa 1960's. Unlimited edition. Paper size about 17 1/8" x 11 1/2" (image: 14 1/8" x 8 3/8"). Full margins and very good overall condition. There is some slight waviness of the paper and a few puckers evident in the upper margin...

Exquisite glazing featuring a gradation that seems a product of both firing conditions and careful nurture by the artist. This piece displays a wonderful balance and nice sense of three-dimensionality.

In fine condition, this tea bowl measures 4.7 inches in diameter (11.8cm) and stands 3.3 inches tall (8.2cm). The bowl comes with its own wood box with poetic name "朝日" (Asahi) inscribed on the inside cover.

A Mashiko ware tea bowl (chawan) by Hamada Shoji. The bowl is glazed in a style known as kaki yu or persimmon color glaze which is often seen in Mashiko wares. Hamada Shoji along with Yanagi Muneyoshi and Barnard Leech were part of the mingei movement in the late 20th century. The movement emphasized the simple minimalist beauty found in daily objects made by unknown artists. Thus, Shoji never signed his works, where he too wanted people to simply appreciate his ceramics, not his notoriety...

A Japanese print done by the noted contemporary Japanese artist, Tadashi Nakayama (1927~). The image is a view of a section of a shrine building at Heian Jingu in Kyoto. Tadashi Nakayama is known for creating prints combining traditional elements from ukiyoe woodblocks and Western oil paintings. Age: 1961. Size: length 28.75" height 24.5"

A pair of cranes under an old pine tree signifies the union of a couple. It is a perfect wedding fukusa (gift cover). The design is beautifully drawn here in Sumi-e black ink style on Shioze silk. A sense of depth is created by the light at the other end of the alley. Signed in pencil by Katsuyuki Nishijima (born 1945) and number 23 in series of 500. Has oval red seal indicating early works.
