Netsuke representing a theatrical mask of Hyottoko - a perplexed peasant - carved by Ryoshu (born in 1912) - one of the best Japanese netsuke carvers of the 20th century (see p. 886 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick). Wonderful expressive face, black and red ink highlights, beautiful finish to the surface. Signed RYOSHU on the back. Height 1 inch.

Chinese porcelain vase, ovoid form, with painted over glazed scene of figures including ladies sitting at a table, another lady with flower and a child, signed on bottom with four character mark, mid 20th century. Size: 5 1/4" high

Chinese baluster vases in famille rose with nine peaches among flowers and vines with bats on a white ground. The symbols of peaches and bats together mean long life and happiness. The inside of each is glazed white, as well as the base. On each base is an overglazed stamped blue six character Qianlong mark.

4-piece set of various types of Korean wooden spools of mid 20th century, including the one engraved the single kanji characters of 'ka' (lit. 'beautiful', 'excellent') and 'sakana' (lit. 'relish') on the both sides and the one with butterfly design and geometrical pattern. Thread is the one originally reeled at that time. approx. 22.5 x 5.8 x 1cm (8.85 x 2.28 x 0.39in) - 13 x 7 x 1cm (5.11 x 2.75 x 0.39in)...

Stoneware water jar or mizusashi as used in the tea ceremony with round bottom developing into a diamond shaped edge. Greyish smooth stoneware, decorated with horizontal grooves, covered with brown iridescent glaze on the outside and with a mottled greenish-yellow glaze on the inside, dripping over the outside edge and down. Black lacquered, diamond-shaped coved. Takatori style, Japan, early Showa era, circa 1930-1950s.

A lovely Chinese porcelain vase featuring a pair of birds sitting on rock with 3 young birds flying above. In excellent condition, no chips, no hairlines, no cracks. It measures 13 3/8 inches high. Mark on bottom. Poem on side.

Netsuke carved by Ryoshu (born in 1912) - one of the best Japanese netsuke carvers of the 20th century. Netsuke represents a doll of Daruma (founder of Zen Buddhism) enveloped in monastic robe, and his eyes can pop in and out. Perfectly captured facial expression, beautifully incised and etched facial hair and 3 flowering chrysanthemums on his robe. It appears that the artist etched a different design on every piece of this model of his - see the other Darumas by Ryoshu on my site...

An amusing tonkotsu, a container for tobacco, skillfully carved in wood as a man emerging from a basket! His clasped hands pierced to allow a suspension cord, not present. The eyes are inlaid and the base has a mother of pearl signature tablet.

Vintage Japanese sunburst jasper obidome (sash ornament). Obidome is worn on an obi cord that holds the obi sash together, it is the only type of jewelry worn by Japanese women on formal occasions, and could serve as netsuke as well. Nice stone, natural lines in the material, beautiful finish, very pleasant to handle. Brass frame with two fittings on the back for a cord. Length 1.6 inches.

A pair of Chinese cloisonne horse decorated with archaic geometric designs often seen in Chinese bronzes from the Shang dynasty with motifs of dragons and phoenixes. The saddle and decorations contain motifs of scrolling vines and designs reminiscent of central Asia. Age: 20th century. Size: Height: 15.75" Width: 7.5" Length: 19"
