Lovely old Japanese clay okimono as the iconography with boys and a large jar, depicting *the famous story of Shiba Onko, so-called 'kamewari' (jar crushing). Meiji-Taisho period, early 20th century, Tohoku region. H 14.8 x 15.2 x 7.2cm (5.82 x 5.98 x 2.83in)...

Rare jacket back panel from the remote Miao Jiupang group from Jiahe County, Guizhou province (see last enlargement), with purple embroidered pattern between the spaces in the tin decoration. This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped. Recently acquired from a private Hong Kong collector, these are the first examples I have send of these I have seen in the past 15 years...

TENGU HEAD

Unique Japanese okimono of the head of 'Tengu' (Long-nosed goblin), originally an wooden mold used for making a paper-mache tengu head (because of such back cutting scar for removing paper-mache head out), then vermilion-painted after retired to lead a second life, Taisho-Showa period, early-mid 20th century, approx. 18 x 18 x Depth 19cm (7.08 x 7.08 x 7.48in). Aged deterioration, uneven paint appearance, crack, exfoliation, etc...

Very large doll made by a known carver. H. 40,5 cm. Second quarter of the 20th century. Condition: both arms reattached. Lovely honey brown patina. The style of this Akuaba with its unusual coiffure is described in the book ‘Akua’ba Asante Wednesday Child’ by Ron van Doorn and Herbert M. Cole. Provenance: Robert van der Heijden, Amsterdam. (Vetter at Parcours des Mondes, Paris).

The Djompre are a small ethnic group with their homeland in the Benue Plateau State in northern Nigeria. They call themselves Kutep or Kutev, the denomination Djombre - which means cannibals - has probably been given to them by the neighbouring Chamba.

This tradition style childs collar of the Dong minority was handmade by the mother or grandmother. The fabric was cut from fragments of handwoven cloth stitched together. The embroidery is an intricate cross stitch pattern...It was used (probably for several generals of children) and is a bit dirty...no rips no tears.

The top shows 3 ancestors faces who are protectors of the family, they are surmounted by a conical crown with carved geometrical lines. The middle part is a “Dorgi”, the symbol of cosmic power. The down part is triangular blade used as a knife to nail the bad spirits while the shaman is fighting with devils and demons. TThe red cloth strips wrapped around the middle part are to protect the shaman hands against the high energy during his fight. Obvious signs of ancient use, circa early 20th...

Old Hakoseko (Japanese tissue holder or purse) for times when women wear formal kimono. They are placed in the chest area with the chains of the kanzashi hair ornaments hanging from the obi belt. The beautiful embroidery work (very delicate) on this hakoseko did not show up in the photos. The red color is a much softer tone; this is truely an elegant piece. Old Chinese silk embroidered scroll of a rooster and a hen amongst flowers. The satin stitch and numerous colored silk threads were used to blend and create this work of art. In excellent condition, it measures as a scroll: 7 feet long X 26 inches.
- Size of silk embroidery 4 feet 10" long x 18" wide.

This kasuri kimono appears to be hand woven (to my eyes) and another Tsukurioki kimono in new condition. Tsukuri-oki means that it has been left unused after it was made into a kimono. This was caused by the drastic changes in their clothing especially after the World War II. In modern days, Kasuri kimonos have been associated with old women from the country-side, definitely for the non-fashionable group. These kasuri kimono are very durable, many were made to be worn as casual work clothes...
