Purchased from Askenasi in Paris in 1978 by Irwin Hersey, renowned author on Asian and primitive art, and publisher of the Primitive Art Newsletter in the 1970s. Featuring a six-sided melon shaped body rising from a short straight foot, tapering to its shoulders onto a straight cylindrical neck and is topped with a fitted cover, decorated with a lion formed finial. The entire ewer is covered overall in a white glaze (qingbai-type) with some soft tones of blue where its glaze pools. Its base is fully unglazed. A black-glazed ewer was finely mold with a chicken-head on the spout.
The glaze was in greasy-feel condition when time-enduring crackles were yielded.

Unusually large Sung Dynasty powder box / container with muted molded design on lid. Nice uniform glaze. Note, there is an apparent hairline on the outer portion of lid which appears only to some extent on the inside of lid. Also, there are a few small chips to the rim of the base section of the powder box. Dimensions: 5 inch diameter, 2 inches in height.
