Ancient Chinese Buddhist Pottery Amulet - Ming Dynasty

This is one of a group of moulded pottery tablets that we bought about twenty years ago. They are made from a relatively high-fired pottery and have a surprising amount of detail. They were made as amulets and votive offerings and were reported to have been excavated from the foundations of an ancient Buddhist temple, where originally many would have been placed to ensure the success of the temple...

This is a lovely ancient Egyptian Scarab, more than 3,000 years old, from the famous Mitry collection (see our Homepage). It is 1/2” long (13 mm) and made of steatite, an easy-to-carve stone that hardens when heated. Glyphs appear to include a Red Crown. Scarabs empowered life and resurrection and were often placed under mummy wrappings to protect the body and help it resurrect. This Scarab comes in a jewelry display cup.

A porcelain plate decorated with floral sprigs and bouquets with a shaped rim decorated with gilt dentil edge marked on the underside with a “B” in underglaze blue. 9 inch (23 cm) diameter. This short lived porcelain factory, roughly 1776-1781, had the Duc d’Orleans (cousin of the King Louis XVI) as its patron.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Some wear to the gilding and a little stacking wear.

Measuring 3.25 inches high by 3.75 inches in diameter, this lovely Victorian Barber Shop, mustache or shaving cup or mug remains in excellent condition but for the subtle wear to the gilt-edged rim.

The cup is embossed with swirls, dots and bows as well as decorated further with gold-drawn designs and 2 large, hand-painted pink roses with 1 smaller cream-colored rose. The cup base is scalloped and the fancy handle is gold-gilded.

A very pretty piece!

A truly unusual vintage Art Nouveau period 7-1/4" x 4-5/8" porcelain dish with a high relief gilt woman smoking c1900. This unsigned dish has lots of gilding, and the woman is emitting a stream of smoke; there is a smoking cigarette to her right. It has a painted mark of 82 in red and it is probably German or Austrian. This item is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, damage or repairs other than some rubbing and losses to the gilding...

A fine quality unsigned pinwheel design American Brilliant Cut glass 3-3/4" tall (including lid) mustard pot c1900-20 . This hand cut crystal jar features a facetted stopper, and it is in excellent original condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than a miniscule fleabite to the bottom rim and the very top of the finial (barely noticeable)...

A hand painted Ashworth Imari ironstone dinner plate from 1899. This wonderfully decorative Victorian 10-1/2" dinner plate is in the Imari palette with a cobalt and gold border and a central floral panel with Oriental cameos around the edge. We haven't found a name for this pattern however B2050 is the same except with a black ground...

Small embroidery with central floral motif using seed stitch, on traditional dark blue silk fabric. May have been used on garment as inside pocket. Approx 6.5 inches on each side.

Typical Boat-shaped bronze axe with oval socket, made by the Dong Son Culture of the Annam region Vietnam, c. 300-100 BC.

Enigmatic for the Dong Son culture and attractive with it's boat form and vivid patina. The Dong Son Culture evolved semi-autonomous from the Han Empire in China until the powerful Han-dynasti Nanyue expanded south around 110 BC. and incoporated the region into the realm.

Size: 7 cm wide and 7,5 cm tall.

Condition: Very fine...

Offered is a very lovely, antique, 12 tube Pharmacy Apothecary Suppository Mold, circa 1880. This example measures 9.5 inches long x 1.75 inches wide x 1 inch high and weighs more than 4 pounds. I believe it is made of bronze and is plated in a nickel finish.

This very durable mold has 2 wing nuts on the base that hinge downwards to facilitate opening...

Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed Pottery Chair (16th Century)

A pottery model of a folding wooden chair made during the 16th century (c.1500 - 1600). Made from a hard creamy-white pottery and coated in green and greenish-yellow glazes that have, in places, acquired a silvery iridescence, a result of very long exposure to moisture. There are also traces of red pigment in places.

Height 15 cm. No restoration or repair...

A high quality brilliant cut crystal fruit bowl c1900-10. This 9-1/4" across and 2-3/8" high bowl has an acid stamp mark with the Elite mark in a maple leaf (which was the mark for Clapperton). This item is in very good original condition with no cracks, losses, damage or repairs other than the expected chips and flakes to the upper rim (on about 8 peaks with the largest shown)...

A finely cut pair of 6-1/2" glass oil and vinegar stoppered cruets c1910-20. These unsigned bottles are in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condition issues are noted; all items are vintage or antique and may have slight signs of gentle use. An attractive antique early American pattern or pressed glass water pitcher in the Loganberry & Grape pattern, produced in the 1880s by Dalzell, Gilmore and Leighton. It measures jug measures 8-3/8" tall; the pattern is very thick, and this pitcher is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, losses, damage or repairs...

Bactrian bronze compartmentalized seal, Late 3rd - Early 2nd Millennium BC. Simple design on the round base, tall handle. Beautyful brown patina - attractive!. Interesting design in compartements.

19th century repousse Chinese silver sew-on clothing ornament in a shape of a Chinese sage riding a mythical qilin. During Qing Dynasty silver figures of traditional mythical characters were sewn onto clothing and hats for decoration. Nicely made from low grade silver, small holes around perimeter for sewing onto clothes, will look much better once tarnish is cleaned. Height 1.83 inches.

An early classic style 2 tical bronze Toe beast Opium weight, Burma, c. 1600-1630.

Nice weight for it’s type in the old classical style featuring the tall octagonal base, depicting a ‘Toe’ or lionbeast – a mythical animal.

Weight: 31,56 grams = 2 Tical

Rarity: Scarce.
