Fine Tall Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Rider
This fine and elegant pottery model of a horse and rider was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery that has been "cold painted" in various coloured pigments. The horse stands alert with its head turned a little to its left. The riders sits with is body turned to his left with arms outstretched.
This is quite large example with a height of 38 cm (15 inches)...

Inside each half is a deep relief carving of Buddhist deities. On one side the three-eyed Aizen Myoo with a lion crown, sitting on a lotus base in the clouds before a red mandorla. A large gold lustre and blue on a cream ground Spanish first half of the 16th century charger, probably Valencia, Manises. Molded with a dome in the center and leaves around the rim with a hole for hanging pierced in the rim before firing. 16 ¾ inches (42.5 cm) diameter.
Condition: Broken and restuck with some fairly crude filling of a couple of lost bits. One serious rim chip and numerous glaze and minor chips on the edge. Some wear to the gold lustre...

Silver inkwell box measures about 5 1/2" by 3" by 3 1/4" and weighs over a pound without the glass inkwells. Silver pen tray measures 7 7/8" by 3 1/4". Signed on bottom of pen tray, as shown. Condition is very good, except for chips on the glass inkwells. Fine quality and rare.
