They are surrounded by painted byobu screens and clouds of gold mist. The painting is rendered in traditional Tosa School manner with flattened over head perspective and fine lined brushwork. Statue of Xuan Wu, or Zhen Wu, God of the North, in formal attire, sitting on a throne, with his two attributes, the snake and the tortoise. Wood with polychrome painting. China, 19th century Height: 13" (32,5 cm). Colors partly chipped, otherwise very good condition. NOTE: Xuan Wu is one of the highest ranking Taoist deities.

Beautiful tansu with a natural kiri wood front and gorgeous lacquer sugi frame, with iron hardware and black Iron handles on each of its drawers. Small locking door with a kan (ring shape) pull on its front. Its left and right sides have two iron handles and one large locking handle. A large Kangxi period famille verte charger, decorated with radiating lotus panels faming floral sprigs and rockwork. The vibrant enamels and porcelain paste is fairly representative of the mid-Kangxi reign. The color palette is however a revival of late Ming wucai pieces...

A charming and superbly decorated 19th c snuff bottle, pairing underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red decoration. The figures depicted are Zhong Kui and his demons. The stopper is made out of dyed bone and is likely a later replacement...
