A French carving set; knife and fork with silver handles, beautifully engraved and crafted. Made in Paris in the 1880’s, in the classicist Louis XVI style so much “en vogue” at the time. The fork made of ivory or bone, the sharp steel blade of the knife marked Paris. Minerva head hall mark and maker’s mark of a bird, possibly, and E. Length of knife "13¼/ 33,5 cm. Condition: the little knob of the fork seems to be replaced, otherwise fine.

An English creamware plate with a molded edge that was exported Holland and decorated there with over glaze enamels. The plate almost certainly depicts the son of William V, Prince of Orange. The sone would become William I of the Netherlands. Born in 1772, he would be the, “Jong Prins” as inscribed in black on the plate. Interestingly the face has been left unfinished. The boy faces an orange tree with fruit on it and a couple of them on the ground...

A timely and quirky soy brown glazed Korean War era chopstick holder with political slogans. The left hand column translates as “support your family and the Chinese military”, the right hand “oppose America, support Korea” and the top characters “increase productivity”. Possibly used in a factory canteen this is the only ceramic I have ever seen from this brief period...

Chinese teapoy, urn-shaped with scrollwork around the base. European style decoration in Famille rose enamels, Qianlong, c 1750. Height: 4 3/4" / 12 cm. Condition: lid: restuck and a chip inside rim, urn: unprofessional restoration to rim.

The dish has an unusual square form with indented corners and a raised almost vertical rim which suggests that it was probably intended to be used for the serving of sashimi, sliced raw fish. This type of dish is described in Japanese as a shihou-sumioshi sara. A Japanese Arita deep dish, early 19th century. The dish is decorated with Ho-o birds and branches of flowering paulownia. The back with clouds and bats and a single spur mark. The Dutch refer to this palette of red and gold on white porcelain as ‘Milk & Blood’.

18th century Japanese sword iron tanto tsuba with brass inlays of autumn leaves blown by the wind. Very good piece with gilding, precise detailing and overall mood of contemplation and melancholy. The plate has a dark brown patina, in excellent condition. Height 2.13 inches.

Black-glazed dish of shallow form with thick wall, comprising a small offset between the rounded lip and the foot. Shallow rounded floor.

19th century Japanese scroll in ink and colors on silk depicting a woman beating a piece of clothing with a mallet by an old bamboo fence. Beautiful work perfectly capturing the essence of the scene, elegant composition, subtle use of color. Signature appears to read SOTANI and is followed by 2 red seals of the artist. Silk brocade mounts, rosewood scroll ends, excellent painting for use during tea ceremony. Painting size 10.25 x 7.75 inches, scroll size 36 x 9.75 inches.

A complexly decorated Chinese export plate in underglaze blue with overglaze red, orange and gilding depicting scrolling plants, two panels with a house under a flowering tree and an octagonal symbol in the center. Brown painted rim. There are trailing blue and red plants on the back and the foot is unglazed. Probably more toward the first quarter of the 18th century than the second quarter. 8 5/8 inches (22 cm) diameter.

Condition: No cracks, hairlines or repairs...

Large ovate hand axe made of a flake of tan quartzite. Bifacial tool with neat front side, the coarser back side with some removal of flakes. The continuous cutting edge weathered by sand and wind action.
This type of tool making is characteristic of the presence of Palaeolithic populations in North Africa.

Fine cowrie shell necklace from northwest Burma, probably Naga on a hand woven macramé cotton cord. This is an old set, circa 80 years with an excellent worn natural patina and almost porcelain like surface these need to be handled to be appreciated. Large and well decorated porcelain pitcher with a group of flowers on one side and on the opposite side inside a gilt cartouche “L. Cummings.” in Gothic letters. The country of origin may be either France, in which case it was probably brought here blank and then decorated here or possibly it was made by an American manufacturer. 18th century Indian bronze Shiva shrine from Western India in a form of a courtyard, the family of Shiva seated around a lingam, including his wife Parvati, their son Ganesha, and Nandi bull at the entrance of the shrine. The back halo has the protective naga (cobra) with its hood wide open, and there is a pile of offerings in the front right corner of the shrine. A New Hall coffee can and saucer bowl, c 1810. Blue underglaze and gilt decoration of Persian (Paisley) flowers against a "seaweed" pattern typical of the period. Unmarked, but the pattern is registered as number 585 in the production of the New Hall factory. Height of can "2¼/ 6 cm, diameter of saucer bowl "5½/ 14 cm. Condition: a hairline and wear to the gilt, esp. of the can, otherwise fine.
