An antique Japanese scroll of a recumbent cat gazing into the foreground amongst the blooming Peony flowers. Hand painted on silk using opaque pigments. Subject was painted in the style reminiscent of the Sung and Ming dynasty images of cats with the unusual exception of its gaze towards the viewer rather than looking up or at the flowers. Both the cat and the Peonies are auspicious symbols in the Japanese culture and often depicted in its art and poetry...

This is antique ecclesiastical sheet music in Latin, from earlier centuries, commonly known as an "antiphonal". These are normally seen as hand painted manuscripts on vellum (animal skin). The present example (17 1/2" by 13 1/2") is a rather typical example, with red bars, and brown/sepia lettering and notes. Condition is good considering the advanced age of the sheet, with overall wrinkling/rippling...

Certain items of jewelry, such as the scarab, carried religious significance to the ancient Egyptians. The scarab represented rebirth, so it was essential to have one or more scarabs adorning the deceased in order to ensure reincarnation to the next level. The owner's name was inscribed on the stone so that his spirit would know it was his.

A Japanese porcelain “100 Boys” plate, 18th century.
This unusual plate was made in Arita between 1720 and 1760. It shows a hall crammed with boys, an elevated youthful figure surrounded by attendants, two of which are carrying fans. To me it looks like the interior of a temple with children depicting the abbot and gathering of monks. Above the Abbot can be found a sign, Hyakushindo, “The Hall of 100 Children.”

This is the original 11 1/4" by 12 1/2" painted face from a 19th century grandfather or grandmother clock, probably American, circa 1840. It stands as a work of folk art in and of itself. How the piece became separated from its clock will forever remain a mystery. There is no maker's name or town, just the Roman numeral numbers, and a theme of strawberries and leaves, along with gold decoration in the corners. There are holes from where this was originally affixed, and charming pencil drawing...

Late Meiji (1890s - 1910s) marine netsuke of a standing tanuki (badger) holding some huge unspecified part of its private parts in its paws. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness. Nicely carved from a section of a walrus tusk, decent depiction of its coat, horn inlaid eyes, nice patina and beautiful sheen to th...

The body is an oval pill-shaped translucent light turquoise glass with an open oval top that is bordered with a scalloped ribbon crest. At each narrow end is a small applique of amber glass. The pages are very nicely framed, with two mats and gold fillets. Framed the entire piece measures 19" by 15". Very elegant and understated yet impressiv...

A pair of icon fragments done on wood with extensive gold highlights. They are both from the same icon, which, I believe, depicted the Four Evangelists. The painting is of exceptional quality, as the photos will hopefully confirm. While I believe that they in fact date to the 17th century, I am conservatively dating them to the 19th or earlier. The panels measure 3-1/2" X 5-3/8" and 3-3/8" X 5-1/2", respectively. Rare and beautiful examples.
A Chinese polychrome cloisonne covered box. The flowers and stylized character decoration in cloisonne, raised above a textured, patinated background which was not enameled. A thin gold wash remaining on the foot rim surface and evident on the cloisons surfaces. The work, patina and the slightly pitted enamels indicative of 19th century work. Condition is fair to good with a few small dents to top which don't visually detract from presentation. Enamel loss is minor to the top and more extensive ...
This porcelain vase was produced in England by Royal Worcester in the 1870s. The date letters in the mark are illegible so it is not possible to specify the exact year. The vase is 7 3/8 inches high. The base measures 5 inches long by 4 5/8 inches wide. The form of this vase is known as “elephant tusk” as it appears to be carved ivory. It also appears to be two separate pieces, the vase on a stand, but is actually one. The vase is made in two layers with the second layer having been cut...

Rare Blue Willow Creamer and Cover in the shape of a cow standing on a grassy knoll with stenciled blue willow decoration.
English, circa 1840.
A very interesting carved and gilded wood panel, found here in Southern California, origin unknown. There are remaining traces of gilding and to a lesser extent, possibly polychrome paint. I have found no writing/labels, and frustratingly, there is no further information traveling with it. The piece measures 15" by 32". I am wondering if it might be of American origin, although in my mind I think it could be French. The wood seems to be pine. The original old distressed, weathered surfaces a...
A rare opportunity to acquire a 19th century American sampler, including not only the date (26th March 1833) but also the location (Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine). The piece measures 14" by 12 1/2" and 21" by 18 1/4" in the period gold frame (framed under the glass, which is broken at lower left corner as seen). Condition is excellent, with the notable exception of significant fading of the color. Most interestingly, this piece includes the name of maker, one Sarah F. Lermond, age 14 in 18...
A fine old charmingly naive watercolor drawing of a boy dressed almost as a girl, in the style of the times, titled in pencil at bottom "William John Babb March 1834". This work appears to be in its original weathered old frame, the original surface beautifully alligatored. Measuring 7 1.2" by 5 1/2" (10" by 8" including frame), the drawing is perfect for the small wall. Colors are perhaps a little faded after nearly 200 years. On the wood backing a sort of mathematical problem: the year 19...
The rim is decorated with a facing Oceanus head showing bushy beards extending to both sides and goat-like ears. The lobster claws expected in the hair of Oceanus are mistakenly rendered as ram horns, the usual attribute for Zeus Ammon.
The Greeks believed Oceanus to be the titan of water, seas, lakes, rivers, oceans, streams and ponds.
In the late Roman imagery of North Africa the head of Oceanus presides over displays of sea life.
