During is height of popularity in the Qing Dynasty, when one went to the opera, souvenir dolls were often purchased. This pair of Chinese opera dolls is probably the oldest that I have seen. Both dolls are in fragile condition. They are mounted on separate stands which may be of the same age as the dolls. They have been together for over 100 years and I am not willing to separate them

An outstanding piece, this scholar's rock in huanguali with finely carved scenes all around the mountain. This piece may date from the Qianlong period, but not later then early 19th century. It measures: H 22 cm, W. 14 cm, D. 10 cm. Condition: excellent, with a beautiful soft patina. A small opening at the top may heve been used as a brush holder.

The base has a “min yao” Yongzheng seal mark in overglaze iron-red enamel, but the cup probably dates to the later 18th Century. The decoration is in overglaze enamels and the rim has a faint brownish wash. Although the piece is in very good condition-- no chips, cracks or restoration, the glaze has numerous tiny iron specks, particularly visible on the interior. The footring displays the very white paste often seen in 18th Century wares...

Japanese samurai dolls are part of the display used for Boy’s Day on every 5th of May in Japan. The dolls are figures of historical heroes or legendary people to inspire the boys of the family (probably husbands are also included today) with their manliness and hopefully discipline and bravery to go along with them. Samurai’s Yoroi armor, Kabuto helmet with swords, bow with arrows are popular items chosen today for the day.

The even-toned stone is somewhat translucent and carves on both sides with a flower basket design. It is reticulated with rather simple carving and incising to produce a dense and almost abstract design. The condition is very good with no chips or breaks. There is a natural fissure occurring in the top of the basket in the center of the stone.

A Very Fine and Rare Celadon Deep Wine (Tea) Cup: Korea, Koryo period, 12th century, This is a really fine and well formed Koryo celadon wine cup; highly rounded sides rising from the low foot to the slightly in-turned rim, applied with a clear, crackled bluish, green celadon glaze extending over the foot ring, the base unglazed with firing earth traces. It is in mint condition. Measures: 3 ½”diameter and 2 ½” high.

Painted in a rich cobalt blue under the glaze with rapid brush strokes in a zenga-like manner, depicting a scholar in his studio. The literatus leans against his table on top of which is placed a brush pot and incense burner. Carved on one side is an old gnarled pine tree growing out of a rocky outcrop. The vase is of a flattened ovoid shape with a rectangular foot that is hollowed to the base. The stone has a white jade-like quality, but is probably a type of serpentine. The tree is carved in high relief with some under-carving, giving it a feeling of being carved almost in the round. This small mountain peak-form scholar's brush rest is molded with a wave design of scrolls, flowers and ribbons on the concave side. This side is also splashed randomly with underglaze cobalt blue. The base is flat and underglazed, now with dark soiling. The entirety is hollow and a small hole is visible to allow for air escape during the firing. It shows minor wear from use and is in overall very good condition, with no cracks, chips or repairs.

This antique Chinese box would have been used during the Qing dynasty, possibly by a scholar or shop keeper. The bottom of this box has covered compartments for seals, chops,calligraphy brush, ink sticks and a built in inkstone. There is an abacus built into the lid.

Chinese Soapstone figure of Pu Tai, well carved on a wooden stand. The stone of warm pale brown colour, fading towards the base, darker on the back. With a deep glossy patina. 19thC. Ht.2 3/4" (7.0cm), L.3 3/8" (8.6cm), excluding stand. Condition: there is a flake 1 3/4" at the rear of the base, which from the wear could be contemporary with the carving. Otherwise excellent.

A fine and rare Blanc de Chine vase in archaistic Gu form made in the Dehua kilns, Fujian province, South China. The finely crackled creamy white glaze is incised vertically with stylized plantain leaves and the waist with three buddhist symbols. The base carries the four character seal mark of the Chenghua emperor but this item was made later, during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722). Condition - excellent - no damages and no restoration. 23cm (9 inches) high.
