This is a design for a kimono textile that has skillfully incorporated the stylized woven fabric texture as part of the design as seen in the central field of flowering iris plants. This lovely clothes brush has a sterling top patterned with the classic Art Nouveau Swirling tresses and flowers. The brush is marked F & B for the Theo. W. Foster & Bro. Company of Providence RI. This company was incorporated under that name in 1898 and was among the largest manufacturers of jewelry & sterling silver vanity goods in the Art Nouveau period. The brush is 5 ½" X ¾" and dates from 1900-1910.

This is a design for a kimono with a leafing vine surrounding a lacquer calligraphy box with inkstone and brushes in tones of grays and black with only the calligraphy brushes having red and yellow handles. The grain of the woodblock shows through the background of the kimono. Printed on mulberry paper and probably a leaf from a design album. There is a stain above the upper right sleeve, and a repaired 2 inch tear at the top of the leaf. The paper has yellowed slightly.
