Beautiful Antique Japanese koruri dans also known as an apothecary tansu. Made from kiri and sugi wood, with one hundred and two small drawers! Each inscribed with the name of a herb/medicine that was to be stored in slotted compartments. There are two thin drawers at its center bottom with flower shaped handle backs and two larger drawers at either side. Each drawer has a round black iron handles.

This pear-form vase, with two tubular handles, is set upon a tall, flaring base. A paired dragon motif in low relief wraps around the lower body and a geometric design surrounds the middle neck and handles. Original example of a Japanese antique isho tansu from the Matsumoto area. Made all of kiri (paulownia) wood with original patina (frame, top, sides, and drawers). Iron hardware includes money bag shaped lock plates specific to Matsumoto tansu, moko shaped drawer pulls and elaborately cut handle back plates and drawer corner bracing. The tansu has 5 large drawers and the lower right hand side has a safe box with 2 small interior drawers.

Late Edo to Early Meiji Period...

This very well carved early 20th century wood netsuke is 1 1/8” high, 1 7/8” long and 1” thick. It depicts two rams, one standing and one lying down. It is signed “Gyokuseki” and is in excellent condition.

Ca. 1500s - 1600s

This incense-burner was cast with Mongolian script encircling body and has two handles with lion masks. It is raised on a slightly flaring footring and a slightly convex base showing wear and an old original surface with a mottled brown patina. The Bombay form rises to end in a flattened rim displaying evidence of long, continued use. The grayish-bronze interior shows its use as an incense burner. An old crack is visible to the head of one handle.

A Chinese bronze bell with double-dragon handle above ruyi-shaped clouds and with bands of carved decoration including flowering branches,bamboo,crabs and a phoenix above a lower band of stylized rocks and waves. Unusually for a Chinese Qing dynasty piece, the bell is made from copper/tin alloy bronze. We think that this item was probably made during the first half of the 19th Century, cica 1820-1850. This late 19th or early 20th century carved ivory netsuke is 2 ¼” long, 1 5/8” wide and half an inch thick. It depicts a fish which has an inlaid eye wrapped in a bamboo leaf. The workmanship is realistic and superb. The signature “Hokutai” is on the bottom. It is in excellent condition.

This 19th century Japanese wood netsuke of KIKORI (woodcutter) is 1 3/8 inches tall, 1 ½ inches wide and 1 1/8 inches thick. It depicts a sitting woodcutter, his left hand holds an ax; his right hand holds a double gourd wine container. A bundle of tree branches leans on his side. It is carved from an unknown hard wood and is not signed. It is in great condition.

A warm grained Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) two piece Yonezawa Isho Tansu (clothing chest from Yonezawa) finely constructed of pine (matsu) and highly desirable paulownia (kiri). 42 x 34 x 16 inches (107 x 86 x 41 cm). Very Good Condition. This chest is from Shonai, a region of Yonezawa that makes chests that are highly prized for their combination of understated Japanese design with a sense of tradition.

Japanese Boxwood Recumbent ox netsuke, wonderful detail, especially carved fur and hooves, inlaid ebony eyes, signed by Tomokazu, good condition, Edo Period. The Chinese Tang Dynasty iron stele is 7 ½ inches tall and 5 ½ inches wide. A Buddhist design is on one side; calligraphy is on reverse. Most of the calligraphy has worn off, but some characters are still legible. It looks like it was made to honor one family¡¯s ancestor. There is a date to indicate it was made during second year of ¡°Zhi De¡±(757 A.D.) of the Tang Dynasty. The old coin style base (stand) is cast iron and was made to fit the stele later. A well patinated 16th/17th Century bronze Gu form vase cast in archaic Shang dynasty style. This is from the collection of the late Reverend Victor Farmer.
