Wonderful lacquered box from Russia's Imperial era. The lid has a handpainted summer troika scene. Scenes depicting troikas in the snow are a bit more common. The design is very colorful and the facial detail on the three people is very nice. The lid is signed "E. Gustov" (translated). The box is lacquered red inside.

A very nice Victorian tartanware paper knife in the form of a pocket knife. The cover is in the McBeth tartan. The folding blade is carved from bone or ivory (the blade is too thin to be able to tell with certainty). Tartanware became popular in the mid-19th century because of Queen Victoria's fascination with Scotland. The colorful plaids were transformed into an enormous array of objects for daily use.

Red Lacquered Papier Mache Pencil Box, beautifully painted of children at play in gold and other soft colors near the bridge, 1 1/4" high, 8 5/8" x 3 3/4" wide. This pencil box has divided interior and hinged top with small round brass button in front to operate the openings and closing when you push the brass button. This extraordinary wood carving is a figure of Santo Nino enveloped in an oval cartouche with swirling flourishes above and below. Nino is robed in dramatic array as she holds a globe in one while giving the sign of Christ in the other. The drapery and decoration of it is exceptional as is the rich relief carving.
