This piece is a fantastic specimen of Southeast Asian art from the 12-13th century Khmer culture. It was cleaned several years ago by the previous owner but does retain some of its original patina. It appears to have been crafted in two pieces and is cast from either a copper or possibly a silver alloy - though I have not had it tested. It is just under 19 cm tall and weighs 335 grams.

This is a very large, very seldom seen, antique, Buddhist Temple Mokugyo. A Mokugyo is a wooden percussion instruments that is used by monks at Buddhist Temples (in Japan, China and Korea) during Buddhist ceremonies that involve the recitation of sutras or mantras to maintain rhythm during chanting. It is made from mostly KUSU (Camphor) wood. For large temple Mokugyos such as this one, the wood must be at least 100-years old...
