The incised motifs are two antler-headed panther rattlesnakes with weeping/forked eye, four hands with eye in the palm and a central stylized eye. Each hand is set so that the fingers point in one of the sacred directions. The entire outside edge is incised with lines reminiscent of the shell mask hairlines and there are four stylized antlers at the four directions...

This early South Coast textile incorporates a two-headed serpent motif, together with a human (or divine) being with arms raised high (sometimes referred to as "the oculate being," because of the prominent, bulging eyes.). This is one of my favorites from the Heflin ceramic collection. It has been broken and glued back together and is missing parts. Dr. Allen Heflin found this piece in Xico, Mexico in 1960 according to his journal. He must have hung it on his wall since he glued a wire to the back. This is a clear representation of a man either emerging or being swallowed by Quetzalcoatl. It is 6" long by 5" wide. The imagery scrams pre-Columbian. It is attributed to the Aztec culture C1300AD.

It is found in only a few places in the world, with the best quality pipestone coming from mines in southwestern Minnesota. Pipestone ranges in color from pale pink, to brick, to blood red. Since pipestone is smooth to the touch, can be easily carved and takes a high polish, it was highly valued by Native Americans. This is an early collection (19th C...
