Beautiful and unusual Jomon Era vessel from the Shiizuka Kaizuka archaelogical site in present day Ibaraki prefecture. The Jomon Period (14,000 B.C.~ 300 B.C.) is considered to be the most intriguing period in Japanese Art history. An antique Shigaraki jar created and fired in this famous kiln region of Japan that was heavily potted. The skin shows the characteristic pock marks and imbedded fieldspar with a natural ash glaze. Originally used for tea storage, it has become a fine example of Japanese Wabisabi or understated elegance as well as an epitome of Mingei folk art.

A fine 11" x 8" Satsuma model of an official seated in a wood grained horse shoe style chair, clothed in finely painted robes and trousers and holding a feather fan. Excellent detail and fine crackle finish. Ex-Sotheby's New York.

Condition: Good. There is an old chip to the nose, a broken fingertip on the hand holding the fan, and an old repair to the back and one side of the base.

This a beautiful and unique Japanese Satsuma bowl. Yabu pieces with unique birds like this one has are rare. The piece is very finely rendered with intense work. Condition is excellent. The bowl measures 5 inches across and is 3 inches tall. This wonderful bowl is from the same great collection the large Yabu museum/exhibition bowl came from. Contact for price and shipping.

Japanese Satsuma Earthenware Koro, Incense Burner, on Tripod feet and two(2) Elephant Handles, signed "Senzan", Ca. Meiji period 1910, 5" high include Foo Dog top, 6 1/4" wide include 2 handles, ladies and Gentlemen in Japanese traditional clothes within several circles between multiple bands of flowers, Gold Foo Lion knob and 3 heart shape openings on top. The condition is good except tiny frit inside the rim on the bottom piece.

Hand made more than hundred years ago in Iga, a small tow in the mountains of Mie prefecture, famous as the birthplace of Iga ninja.

Items like ours gave big inspiration to one of the worlds famous potter Tsujimura Shiro.

Iga-yaki is a style of pottery where the ceramic is fired at high temperatures causing it to crystallize in a red hue, with brown-grey burn marks caused by log ashes, and the melting effect of the vidro (feldspatic glass)...

Thick feldspar glaze highlighted by reddish ore seeping from the iron-rich clay, this is a very attractive Shino vessel that may have originally been a yunomi but was later fitted with a silver globe and repurposed as an incense burner (koro). In Japan extending the useful life of a piece—by converting it to another use or perhaps by mending broken pieces (kintsugi)—is a common practice which demonstrates a deep consideration and respect for ceramic works of art...
