A Japanese boxwood okimono of a rat-catcher preparing the miso on a big bowl before catching the rat. Black horn eyes. Excellent quality and great patina. Jigaku signature under the base. During the Edo period, blind people were recruited to hunt rats. With their sensitivity and hearing, they were able to hunt small rodents. Meiji period late 19th century Sizes: 9 x 8,5 x 8,5 cm. Late Meiji (1890s to 1910s) netsuke of a standing fat baby boy wearing just a bib and holding a thick rope that serves as a collar for a puppy standing next to him. Excellent carving, great chubby face, superb depiction of his fat body and fingers. Nice flow to the rope with its twisted texture, expert use of black, orange and golden ink, beautiful wear and patina. Signed HOZAN on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 470, number 741). Height 1 13/16 inches.

A superb and near lifesize Thai head of Buddha, Ayutthaya, Thailand. c. 15th century

The head of longish oval shape, with clearly delineated eyes and lids lowered in meditation, a smiling mouth and tiny curls covering head and ushnisha.

Sandstone was a highly coveted material during the early part of the Ayutthaya period, and the use of curved lines and petite bumps for hair reflect the influence of Indian Gupta stylization.

An interesting and impressive large Thai bronze sculpture with silver and glass decoration, early-mid 18th. century.

Surely made for a wealthy temple or person. The Buddha is made in the finest later Ayutthaya style, likely 1750 or so. Crowned Buddha with an exceptionally rich decoration in silver and bronze beads and thick thread of Jewellery and floral design on the entire figure. Many of the leafs looks like solid silver and much of the decor too...
