19th century small netsuke of a sennin (Chinese sage) mobbed by four toads. For some unexplainable (probably prophetic) reason sennin’s face looks exactly like that of Vladimir Lenin, although the netsuke is a humorous take on Gama sennin”s popularity with amphibians. Wonderful carving with great quality of facial expression and nice detailing - see the warty backs of the toads. Himotoshi (cord opening) goes under the belt on the back, old age lines...

White jade jewelry representing a phoenix in flight among plants. The vigorous, angular sculpture and multi-level carving are typical of the period of the 15th-16th century during the Chinese Ming dynasty. However, it could be older. The color of jade is grayish white, it was inlaid on the lid of a pretty precious wooden box with beautiful veins, which contributed to protecting it. Japanese Edo to Meiji period Kanto style personal wood clothing chest (isho-dansu) with a single drawer on top and hinged burlwood doors opening to three additional drawers below. The top drawer has a rectangular black iron lockplate. The burlwood doors (referred to as "kannon-biraki do") are supported by five iron hinges on each side and a horizontal iron strap with a central round lockplate to secure and lock the doors. Late Qing Dynasty, most likely Guangxu Period porcelain vase with wonderful mountain and garden scene and two scholars playing weiqi. The mouth rim is cracked and is noted in close-ups. 23cm/9in height and 15cm/5.9 diameter.

Antique Korean sewing box made using the 1500 year old Korean paper technique called Hanji. Paper is made by hand from mulberry pulp and used to fashion various items. This 8 sided box is decorated with Double Happiness symbols and stands on four feet made of sea shells.

Very nice song dynasty longquan celadon small dish with twin fish motive covered with nice bluish green glazed.13,3 cm diameter. 3,5 cm high. Dish has single hairline, no chipped, free from any restorations.

Japanese Satsuma foliate form bowl decorated in overglaze pigments and gilt highlights with a large bird in a cherry tree at the foreground set against a landscape scene with beauties in a pavilion at the right and a waterfall at the left. The exterior features three flying female mythological figures. The base bears a gold on black square “Satsuma Hotoda” mark and circular Satsuma family crest. 4 1/4” diameter x 1 3/4” high. Elegantly shaped Ki-Seto Chawan from the Edo Period, early 19th century with a rarely seen gold rim. Precious metal rings were added when the chawan was made for the aristocracy and for the high nobility.

The beautiful and glossy glaze (guinomi-de) has a fantastic crazing. The bowl has also a decoration with vivid tanpan marks ( copper green marks ).

This Ki-Seto tea bowl is in very good condition, very unusual for a chawan of this age...
