Rather unusual early Showa period (1910s) Japanese mingei (Arts and Crafts) copper box with chased and enameled decoration of a puff of cloud and a white racing pigeon with feather covered legs. Wonderful combination of uchidashi (hammered-out) and moriage (piled-up) techniques: metal was raised from the opposite side and raised surface was subsequently thickly enameled and fired...

A well-cast bronze figure of a squatting horned demon (oni), dating to the late Edo period. Arms outstretched, as if to grab something (or someone?). Strong, expressive facial features. Measures 4-1/2" in height. Affixed to a custom base, which adds another inch or so, for a total height of just under 6". Traces of pigment.

The front exterior of the shrine is made with beautiful red finish hardwood with black lacquer sides, folding silk meshed interior doors with gilt lacquer panels of flying cranes, a beautiful miniature temple scene inside where the image of a deity and offerings are to be placed. Stunning set of four enameled cocktail glasses, almost certainly by Moser. The quality of the glass is superlative. The enameled rooster motif is magnified through the thick glass of the base, so that it looks quite large from inside the bowl (it might be a bit frightening after drinking an entire martini!) The bowls are lightly paneled and are edged in a thin line of gilding.

One glass has a flake at the bottom edge (see photo) and two pinpoint roughnesses along the top rim...

Okutani Shuseki (1871-1936) was born in Osaka and lived in Kyoto for most of his life. His artistic lineage is among the very best. He, along with Yamamoto Shunkyo and others, studied under Mori Kansai, who was the pupil and adopted son-in-law of Mori Tetsuzan, who was one of Maruyama Okyo's best pupils. Like all painters of the Mori family school, Shuseki's nature paintings are remarkable for their unsentimental naturalism, showing his keen interest in the essence of nature...

22 inches long and a century of hard use but the tip is clean and sharp. I suspect a skilled carpenter could still use this old Chinese drill to build a cabinet or post and beam house. Personally, I am so thankful for electrical tools.

Very unusual 19th century netsuke representing a bird in flight. It may be a swallow, but I am not sure. Wonderful spirited carving capturing the essence of the creature with its swiftness, beautiful face, eyes are double inlaid with horn, excellent depiction of different feathers. Great wear and patina, old age lines. Length 2 1/4 inches.

This bone pendant is 1 3/4". It has been drilled and modified. It may be an atlatl finger rest. It is C1000AD. I purchased it from Tom Davis many years ago. It is from Kentucky.

Chinese lacquer export chair. Sturdy construction and black lacquer. The Chinese chair is patterned after an archaic style with flanges and apron spandrels. It's decorated with red undertone and gilt lacquer in a scrolling lotus motif. The main back splat forms an archaic Hu vase painted with fine details of a classical landscape. Japanese lacquered on Ceramic No Mask Obishimi Netsuke, Ca. 1920, Meiji period, 1 3/8" high, 1 1/8" wide, 3/4" deep, reddish brown lacquer on Ceramic with painted gold bull's eye, deep wrinkles on forehead, raised fat cheeks, details are bold and deep. The condition is good.
