A wonderful example of an original Japanese Armored Safe chest. Constructed of hand selected and quartered sawn keyaki (zalkova hardwood) and hand forged iron hardware / fittings. Thick hinged door opens to reveal 4 individual drawers with secret compartment located under the largest (bottom) drawer. Internal drawers are made of original light kiri (paulownia) wood.

A Mt. Washington scalloped rim bowl decorated with orchids. The 3 3/4 inch diameter, 2 3/4 inch tall satin finish bowl has subtle diagonal ribs and a polished pontil mark. The color shades from pale lavender on the flared rim to colorless at the bottom. The coloration appears similar to the bowl shown in plate 10-17 on page 243 in Wilson’s “Mt Washington & Pairpoint Glass” and the decoration matches that on the sugar shaker in plate 10-18 of the same book.

On the base is the six character reign mark of the Kangxi emperor (1662 - 1722) but this item was made later - during the reign of the Guangxu emperor (1875 - 1908). Condition - excellent. Chinese antique monochrome porcelain incensor with round squat body on three legs. The red oxblood glaze transitions to white around the short neck and flares slightly. Thick drips on the underside of the body. The copper content of the glaze is evident in green colored drippings on the inside of the lip.
