Rare and beautiful Japanese Kuruma tansu (storage chest on wheels), made of keyaki (elm) wood with original finish, iron hardware, interior has shelf and three small safe drawers, Edo Period (early 19th century). A well made 18th century Italian dry drug jar. The body is a red clay covered with white slip then painted in blue with a dentil style pattern at the top and bottom with the name of the drug in the central section. The inside is similarly covered in white slip and shows the ridges from being turned on a potter’s wheel. This jar would have been part of a set of jars used for dry drugs in a pharmacy. 7 ¼ inches tall and 4 ¾ inched diameter...

A pair of dry drug jars decorated with blue leaves top and bottom and the drug name in the middle, all over a light grayish blue glaze. This form is typical of the 18th century Italian drug jars. The hand throwing on a wheel is evident on the glazed interior of both jars. 7 ¼ inches tall and 4 ¾ inches diameter, (18.5 cm tall, 12 cm diameter).

Condition; Both have chips on the base and roughness from throwing on the mouth. Both have later marking on the base with a magic marker.

A small maiolica teapot and cover hand painted with rural scenes dominated by a tree in the foreground on either side. On the sides with the spout and the handle the decoration is the sky with birds. A storehouse (kura) lantern(andon) from late 19th century Japan, made of wooden base, and metal wire body, and hanging hook. Interior paper is a later addition. I have found a long Japanese medicine bottle that fits perfectly inside the lantern, making it suitable for flower arranging. H.17cm(6.7") x Dia.8cm(3").

A very large Chinese porcelain wucai enameled ewer or wine pot of compressed ovoid form with cover decorated with an overall brocade pattern composed of hexagonal cells each containing an enamelled four petal flower inset with two large reserves containing respectively Camelias and Rocks, and Flowering Plum and Rocks. The body of the ewer is comparatively thinly potted, and the handle and spout are simply luted to the body with slip. The ewer was made for the Japanese market...

Very Fine and Beautifully Rendered Hono Ema from the Tensho Shrine, dated October 7, 1695. The inscription reads Mikawa Province (modern day eastern Aichi Prefecture), Tomifuku-gun ('county'), Oshiro Mountain. While the wealthy would often give a horse as a gift to a Shinto shrine, the common person would give a Hono Ema (literally 'gift horse picture'). This very well carved early 20th century Japanese netsuke is three quarters of an inch high, 1 3/8 inches wide and 1 ½ inches deep. It depicts two playful mice sitting in a woven basket. Both mice have inlayed horn eyes. It is signed “Shozan”. It is in excellent condition.
