Most Alabama Doll collectors are quite familiar with the fabled story of the inventors rise to success and subsequent business troubles which ended the doll maker's career sooner than we have liked, but we are fortunate to offer a survivor from that in the form of this baby girl doll. This is a wonderful cloth doll with a naïve nicely painted face, no in painting except a little on the back of her head. She has big brown eyes, rosy cheeks and a rose bud mouth. She has a firmly stuffed cloth body with attached arms and legs and has jointed knees. She has on a hand sewn blue polka dot dress that fits her perfectly and may be original and a white petticoat the is a little tight around her waist and is not original but does the trick...

This doll holds her head up high, has a hint of a smile, has a great body, sits nicely, doesn't cause any trouble and hasn't complained that her dress doesn't have any buttons or quite meet at the neck. She is 21" tall, stuffed firmly with cotton, has no rips or tears. She has embroidered face with shoe button eyes. Her hair is wool and so nicely done. She has pantaloons, petticoat and dress that are all nice and are antique...

This wonderful topsy turvey is in almost original condition. I don't think she was played with or handled that much but is definitely old and right. Both faces are done by the same hand. The are very nicely done in a very direct manner by an unskilled hand that really was good. The white doll has a bonnet and a blouse and a soft pink cotton skirt. The black doll has on a blouse and a red checked skirt. The two heads are 14" from head to head and the skirts are just a 1/2" longer...

This is a very nice 19th C. black cloth doll with strong embroidered face. She is as found and is wearing an antique plaid dress that is all hand sewn, with a very fine wool petticoat under it and knit bloomers. Her body is stockinette that is over black cotton lining and she is firmly stuffed with cotton. Her arms and legs and knees are jointed. Her condition shows wear on some of the stockinette and her face has little picky holes that have been sort of mended, see picture...

This doll was made with things at hand and with a simple hand drawn pencil face. She has short folky arms with stitched defined fingers. She is stuffed with rag and straw and cotton. She crinkles a bit when squeezed here and there. She is as found in her mustard colored make-do old calico dress. It is sewn closed so I am not going to take it off. Her head may have been recovered at some point but this covering is old, She is jointed at the shoulders and hips so she sits nicely...

This lovely antique black cloth doll with a simple pencil face is stuffed with rags. I can't remember ever having another black doll with a pencil face. Usually the material is too dark for a pencil face to show. Her body is all original and hand sewn. Her clothes are as found when I bought her. Her top is a knit long john shirt made for a very young child and her skirt is a wonderful antique skirt in soft shades of brown and blue and yellow and green...

A most unusual black doll that has her name and owners initials written in brown ink on her bloomers. R.W. is on her right leg and DINA is on her left leg. Her face is nicely embroidered with lover's knots for pupils. She has brown floss hair that is just across her forehead, something I don't recall seeing before on any other doll. This 13" needle sculpture painted black doll is so much nicer than most. Someone spent a lot of time hand sewing and painting her features. She has ears and yarn hair sewn on but spotty at this point. She has a curvy little stockinette body. Her homespun, (really homespun) butterscotch checked dress even has a pocket in it. Naïve but nicely painted face doll with great red curls around her face. She is 21" tall and her body has a very broad chest that narrows into a smaller waist and hardly any flare to her hips. She is jointed at the shoulders and at the hips. She is very firmly packed with cotton. She has reinforced stitches at her neck below her chin and then stitches at the back of her neck also. She sits nicely and she knows that she is pretty. Circa 1890.

This interesting cloth doll has a pencil face fashioned after a "Babyland" rag doll. The little girl receiving this doll must have been thrilled to have a doll looking like and expensive bought one. This face is a second face that has been there a long time. She has a sewn on bonnet that fringes her face. Her arms have been recovered at the same time her face was done, same material. She is cotton stuffed and sits nicely. Clothes old but not original. She is 19"tall and circa 1890-1900.

This is a nice antique cloth doll with a sweet embroidered face. She has blue eyes with eyelashes all the way around and pink floss mouth. It is a surprise that her face does not show any anger or humiliation from the extreme hairdo. I can just see the little girl with her mother's pointy scissors clipping all her hair with great satisfaction. She was a blond and there is a small fringe that frames her face and then rows of stitches on the back of her head that at one time was securing yarn hair...

It is always fun to find something I haven't seen before, this is a black man oilcloth doll. Oilcloth was a heavy duty cotton or linen cloth that was in the old days soaked in linseed oil until it became saturated. The cloth was then hung to dry to produce an almost waterproof fabric. It often was used to cover kitchen tables, line shelves AND was used to make children's soft toys that were durable and waterproof. This toy soldier dates to the late 1800's early 1900's. Very unusual painted face character doll with the best laughing eyes. So many dolls are either very pretty or have a very neutral face with a straight line for a mouth, this doll leaves nothing to the imagination, she is down right giddy. How cool is that! She is painted with oil paint on fabric with most of the fabric showing through, not from wear but the way she was painted. She had great painted copper colored hair that is painted in swirls. She has a chunky firmly stuffed with cotton body. ...

This is another example of a make-do doll. She has a very early body that probably had a china or papier mache head. It was sure easier to just make a cloth head and put it on a doll body that had a broken head than to make the whole doll. She is 24" tall and is firmly stuffed with cotton. The body is 1860 and the head is 1890, pretty cool. She is wearing a early soft red dress and a full slip and a flannel blue and white striped petticoat. She is a real character and her name is Lizzy.

This is a very nice example of a black cloth broom doll. I don't get these very often and this one has the best face. The embroidery is densely stitched and she is quite early. She is wearing a blue calico dress that is faded and shows wear. There is a mend on her skirt that is crude but works. The top layer of black stockinette has weakness and some holes. Just 11" tall with a great embroidered face this cloth doll has a lot going for her. She is all original. She has yarn hair, finely embroidered face with a stitch raised nose, and pouty little mouth. Her clothes are all original and sewn on. She has black velvet shoes that show wear on the toes, (how does that happen!). She has silk stockings, bloomers, lace petticoat, blue dress with a self belt and lace around the neck. She is a cute and she can be. Circa 1900
