Amish sister doll from Holmes County Ohio that are adorable, early, rag stuffed, identical clothes but one has blue and the other green. They are early for Amish dolls on the market, probably date to the 1890's-1910. They are packed with rags giving them a great hefty feel. This 1880 cloth doll has a very nicely drawn ink face with strong features softened by time. Her lips have a trace of red with a hint of a smile, her eyes are big and brown and her nose and eyebrows are a gray black this all adds up to a very kindly looking face. The black hat covers a trauma to her head and to her right ear. The rest of her face is not fragile so I think it was a blow to the head and ear not a breakdown of fabric...

This doll is from a collection in Maine. She is stockinette that was originally early polished cotton and was recovered 50 t0 75 years ago. So she is all original just recovered. This is not that uncommon if the doll was valued it was repaired. Old black fabric dye had iron oxide that was corrosive and weaken fabric. It is why this face has some holes. Her face has beautiful embroidery, the nose has to be the fanciest I have ever seen. She has shoe button eyes and pieces of white linen tacked on...
This fine antique cloth doll all hand-sewn with a delicately embroidered face, pinched nose, and rosy cheeks have an air of sophistication. She has on a two-piece soft blue-green wool dress, faded some in the front, with antique petticoat and pantaloons, sock, and leather shoes.

Owned by Mossi girls and women, small figures like these that we call "dolls" could function both as a toy for a young girl or as an object to promote the fertility of a woman.
This cloth doll is reminiscent of the old days, 1970-80s, when I saw and bought a lot of faceless dolls and they were not all Amish. I think faces were not as important to all children or mothers as we may think they are nowadays. Her sweet little body is shapely, with jointed arms and legs.
