This antique handsewn doll has the early sloped shoulders, with carefully pieced construction, finely embroidered face with pinched raised nose, detailed lips, eyes and eyebrows. Her body is the hourglass shape, her legs are continuous and even though she is not jointed, she sits easily. She has great astrakhan hair. She is cotton stuffed rather firmly, has sewn on socks and rounded off hands. She is wearing a skirt and blouse, petticoat and bloomers all antique but not original, just nice...
I think she is one tough cookie. Very stern with a small little straight line for a mouth, long straight pinched nose and big button eyes outlined in red floss. She has astrakhan hair, a nice early shaped body, jointed at the shoulders and hips and packed firmly with cotton. The dress is sewn on and fits really well. It is silk and a little fragile around the top of the sleeves where it is gathered and puffy. A white petticoat is under the dress and black socks cover her nicely shaped feet...
I have owned this doll for 30 or more years and I never found the right clothes for him and I like his looks without clothes. When I took the pictures today of him I suddenly thought, maybe it is a her and not a him. I am not sure and I guess it doesn't matter, I still like the doll without clothes. Here is a very nice all original wooden doll that is 15" tall. She has a great painted face, jointed arms and legs, original clothes I think but at least they were made for her and they are early. Under her dress she has a wool petticoat and the a cotton one and then another cotton one and the pantaloons. She is wearing a matching bonnet. Condition is great...

Boy dolls are just hard to find, fewer were made but when found they are more likely to have good clothes. Boys liked policeman, soldiers, construction workers and sailors. This great sailor is 21" tall, has a nicely embroidered face, is all hand sewn, has the four seam head and has really nice hands with fingers and thumbs. He is very firmly stuffed with cotton. Extremely early bedpost doll with carved features. She is 13" tall, with very nice turnings. She has attached cloth arms that are old but not original. At least one older tack remains from the earlier arms. She is solid, heavy, no worm holes, but there are a few nail holes near the base on one side. This is a nice antique cloth doll with a sweet embroidered face. She has blue eyes with eyelashes all the way around and pink floss mouth. It is a surprise that her face does not show any anger or humiliation from the extreme hairdo. I can just see the little girl with her mother's pointy scissors clipping all her hair with great satisfaction. She was a blond and there is a small fringe that frames her face and then rows of stitches on the back of her head that at one time was securing yarn hair...

This doll is the first kind of cloth dolls that started to come to market in the 1970's. There were not many cloth dolls in shops or at shows but when I found them they were sort of like this. The nice center seam antique cloth doll has a very nice painted face and raveled yarn hair. She has stitched defined fingers and thumbs. She is made with black sateen and her body is very nicely constructed. She has ears and I like it when dolls have ears. Her ears are not that noticeable because her hair covers them somewhat.
